Shorts to go under skirts - where to buy?

What do you dress your toddlers in under their skirts/dresses instead of tights?

I was thinking of something along the lines of cycling shorts. Some of her skirts are too short to not have anything but I don't want to buy those big knickers to go over the nappy, as I'm hoping to try toilet training my daughter over the summer. She has leggings but they defeat the purpose of wearing a skirt on a very warm day.

I have been trying to resolve this one for years! Sainsbury's occasionally have legging type shorts (half way down thigh) which work well but they don't sell them very often. I've found that Next pants have wider gusset so are less inclined to move inappropriately.

I've often considered starting a line of proper short type pants for little girls as I think there is a major gap in the market. (The "shorts" style pants that are sold have a seam down the centre which makes the probelm even worse imo)

M and S have good shorts style pants, they are the seamless ones. They do packs of 3 but not sure what size they start at.

I would buy normal pretty pants a size up. When Miss Oi was around 18 months and toddling my mum bought her some age 2-3 pants from Cath Kidston to wear over nappies, which owrked perfectly and at age 3.5 she's still wearing them. Though, to be honest, I think cropped leggings and a top are more practical summer wear, you can't slide properly in a dress, your legs stick to the slide. The weather's been so rubbish that Miss Oi hasn't worn just a summer dress without leggings yet this year!

Damzel - thanks for the link, will definitely look into it. I found black cycling shorts for girls starting age 3 in the school uniform section at Sainsbury's. The waist looks like it may be too thick to go under the waistband of skirts but would work under dresses.

*Potty training novice* - we also need to take the plunge and try potty training in the next few months, perhaps I'm being really dim but why can't they wear the big knickers over nappies if they're potty training? Just because it takes too long to get them off in a rush? I was on the lookout for some big knickers (mothercare?), am I about to make a foolish error?!

I use old leggings (the ones with holes in the knees) and then cut them off with pinking shears!

no need for sewing or any time spent.

From one potty training novice to another, my reasons for avoiding the big knickers are:

- if potty training is successful then I'm assuming the knickers will become redundant, so didn't want waste money on them and

- successful or not, I didn't really like the idea of my daughter flashing her knickers (that look like knickers) but preferred the idea of the shorts, which look less like underwear.

Embo71 - brilliant idea! My daughter just yesterday made a hole in a pair of her leggings!

the knickers won't become redundant if you buy normal pants a size up, they will grow into them - as I said, Miss Oi is still wearing the ones she had to go over a nappy. If she's 2, get aged 3-4 and in a few months time she'll be wearing them.

If you are just about to potty train the best thing I found was just to take the plunge and get pants for them. When I tried pull ups it just confused my daughter as they felt like nappies. Then invest in a potette potty. They are fab. Fold up so fit in a large change bag or in basket of buggy and doubles as a travel toilet seat when having to use public toilets. Etc. they are fab and we still pop ours in bag when on long journeys even though my daughter is neary 6. The amount of times we have used it on train when toilets are out of order etc. been a lifesaver.

Just bought some cheap knickers to try potty training....I think I need the mental preparation more than my daughter!

Potette is the business. Highly recommend. Do not understand knickers/ shorts thing. When potty training they wear knickers. We needed about 15 pairs. You take spares everywhere. Before they are potty training they wear nappies. I hope this is not some coy/ sexualisation if small children thing where showing your knickers when you are 2 or 3 is bad? Is it not hot and sweaty to wear an extra layer in the summer?
