Ask the price in future.  I used to drink in the Crystal Palace Tavern. What happened to that local boozer?

I've twice refused to pay, once for a half which was so expensive I thought they were charging me for a pint, on Vauxhall embankment.  More recently I refused to pay in the Dulwich Woodhouse, but I should have known it would be overpriced.  Both pubs had the right to insist I paid

Suggest you drink in the Blythe, Castle or Capitol in future

The CPT used to be our local. I still miss it.

The Castle is in some ways similar though! The other two you suggest are a bus ride away (depending on where you live, obviously!)

You'd better not go to the Palladium then - two glasses of red wine in the interval last Saturday – £26.

I'd also recommend avoiding the Royal Albert Hall - £15 for a 250ml glass of red. 175ml is a bargain £13

That applies to most lager.

Earl pubs in London have always been expensive.  Or you can compromise your principles and go to wetherspoons.  Or go to the Blythe the best pub in the world.

The creation of pub chains, closing of breweries and national and regional brewers to global multi-nationals hasn't helped.

But go into LL at a weekend and there are plenty of people prepared to pay top dollar for overhopped overcooled over fizzy and over priced IPA.  Don't get me started on the contamination of our traditional apple fermented drink (cider) with other fruits to make it an alcopop.

does anyone know the reason for the nosedive in standards across the board at the EDT recently.

incompetent badly trained new bar staff, who have overcharged, double charged or short changed on numerous occasions.

some who do not seem to know how to pull a pint properly.

cleanliness has taken a dip too

I don't know about that, but they used to do a really tasty and reasonably priced veggie sausage and mash with gravy.

The last time we had it, the sausages were small and dry and practically inedible, and the menu had completely changed.

Apparently there is a new chef. Who uses a different supplier for the sausages.

Don't think we will be eating there again.

Time we had a Wetherspoons in Dulwich !

Anyone  suggest a suitable site ?

perhaps near the Poundshop ?

It was suggested at one time that what became The Cherry Tree would be a good place for a Wetherspoons.

I can't now remember whether Wetherspoons actually put in a bid for it, but anyway if they did it obviously didn't happen.

Shame! I like Wetherspoonses 😀

Good range of ale at a cheap price 😀

Though they are usually in interesting old buildings, and the previous incarnation of The Cherry Tree, whose name I can't remember, certainly wasn't that 🤣

Eldest daughter got student loan and after 20 years managed to pay it off, Youngest daughter still paying hers 18 years later. Granddaughter - still paying after 6 years. Grandson decided against FE and secured an apprentenship. I am glad that I am an old codger and not young anymore !

    • It is not only Southwark - our grandson, partner and 7 year old had a one bed council flat for years in Harlow Essex and all the properties offered were in poor condition. They eventually took a property as if they refused another one they would drop to the bottom of the Housing List. It was damp and in need of a level of renovation. Having lived in these conditions for a while they were offered better council accommodation recently, but further away from child's school. They had to pay 2 lots of rent for a few weeks as council had to undertake work in the new premises before they could move in,
    • Just had an interior decorating job done by Andy. The final outcome looks lovely and he did some remedial work at the same time to fill in gaps in the ceiling (due to previous electrical work) and to remediate any similar areas to ensure a polished overall look. Would highly recommend him for any similar job, he quoted a very reasonable price for the job as well. Thanks Andy!
