It's sad to see an independent affordable cafe shut down. I hope something similar opens up in its place. Plough Cafe and Johnnie's still do good caff food, as does the cafe inside Christ Church East Dulwich at 363 Barry Rd (Monday 10am to 2pm, Tuesday & Thursday 9am to 4pm, Wednesday & Friday 9am to 3pm).

Apparently going to be a place called "Love Dulwich" - plans here.

Be sad to see it go, itmight not have had the best food overall, it did some great dishes and was always good value.

I think it was one of the first places we went to when we moved into the area 15+ years ago.

I have fond memories of getting bacon rolls and coffee  there at (what seemed like) crack of dawn for us and the crew building the stage for the live  music on Goose Green for Dulwich Festival Fair.

Didn't use it much otherwise, but will be sorry to see it go, as it was sort of comforting to know it was there ❤️. A relic of the "old" East Dulwich.

Does anybody apart from me remember the Dream Machine which used to be underneath it?  I loved that place so much! It was like being a student again!

i remember the weekend fry-ups at Dulwich Cafe that junior Civilservant was treated to when she was little - that was over a decade ago!  We can still rely on Johnnie's and the caff on Upland road opposite ChichiRaRa if anyone needs a quick emergency infusion of sos/chips/beans

That's gently encouraging - the applicant (or at least someone with the same name in the same part of the country and the same industry) seems to be a director of Wickham Bistro Ltd, which in turn seems to operate a nice looking cafe in Bromley.

Will be missed. Always does a decent fry up and not too pricey. The owner told me last year that the rent and rates were killing him. He also said that he's lost quite a bit of passing trade now there's coffee machines in places like the co op etc.

There are coffee machines in the Co-op???

Obviously the place underneath Dulwich Cafe no longer exists but the concept/"organisation" lives on

I spoke to owner who said that they had put the rent up just too much.

Had a conversation with him before Christmas about the rents. I nearly choked on a chip when he told me what he was paying out for rent and business rates. It's a fair sized space but very expensive all the same. I thought at the time that his days there must be numbered. Will be a shame to see them go because the meals are always spot on, reasonably priced and the staff are always pleasant and welcoming.

    • Just for information: I see that the Licensing Sub-committee has the Tesco application as item 1 on their 24 July meeting agenda.  https://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=172&MId=8329. The officer's report to the committtee provides a good succinct summary.  I see, from (original) p.31 of the full public pack, (or more conveniently the supporting documents) that Tesco Legal Dept on 12 June reported that they'd agreed with the police's suggested conditions to be attached to the licence, and the police accordingly withdrew their own representation.  That leaves just one representation, from a member of the public, to be dealt with on the day. I still think it's not necessarily to be presumed that Tesco will definitely be taking over the premises.  I see that Poundland themselves were granted an off-sales licence on 21 Feb 2023, and surrendered it on 3 July 2025.  I'm not sure they actually ever used it themselves.  Did they? https://www.southwark.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-09/Statement of Licensing Policy 2021-2026.pdf is a full statement of the policy and its application, for thems as is interested.

    • Well, quite. Do you know where your lad's going tonight?
    • I'd get rid of duty free shopping.  Nothing to do with tourist tax but something I hate.  All that glitz as you try to get through to Wetherspoons in the departure lounge.  No great savings over on line or even at times supermarkets, and the hypocrisy of selling cheap cancer sticks. Ok back to tourist tax
