You could gently inform him that you are mates with some seriously heavy Sarf London geezas who could come round and 'ave a word with him if he continues with the noise. This might work since he might not want to risk playing loud music on the ground that you are bluffing.

Currently experiencing similar problem but there are also complicated family matters at play too. One of the children upstairs has been arrested a few times for antisocial behaviour but returns or forces his way in and plays loud music or causes a ruckus. Big shame because we like our flat but might move out because of noisy neighbours - a major inconvenience for us.

I don't agree that just because we live in London or in closer proximity to other people that loudness should be tolerated. It's about respect. I don't host loud parties or raise my voice - so why should I or anyone else who plays by the rules have to put up with it?!

But someone having a one off party for example is different than daily disturbance by repeated noise. One I think can be tolerated, the other can't. There are definitely people who are unreasonable when it comes to what is deemed acceptable noise (and they are often lone voices) and then there are people who are unreasonable when it comes to disturbing their neighbours.

In a mega city there will always be noise....it's just a question of finding and enforcing reasonable balance.

Reported it already to the council, the police and my landlord (who owns both flat, but is useless). Alas it continues - its like they're stupid or ignorant, or something. As I say, there are other complicated factors at play and it is difficult to get to the bottom of what is going on but all I know is there are frequent disturbances and the police call round every now and again.

Also - sorry Lynnne for hijacking the post somewhat. Should i start one afresh if this is a bit of a tangent?

There is currently a very very loud party somewhere at the Peckham Rye end of East Dulwich Road. To the point where we cannot have our windows open at all. I'm not a killjoy but i am trying to read some papers for an early morning work meeting, my concentration is not helped by someone playing reggae so loud it may as well be in my flat.

It's in the estate at the top of Fenwick, Cyclemonkey.

It is very loud but more worryingly someone's just changed the vibe from lover's rock to late Luther, Lionel and Stevie - not even the early stuff.

At least it's pretty eclectic, I'm kind of looking forward to King Tubby vs USA for Africa later.

The problem with one off 'parties' is that in a dense population this can lead to a lot of disturbances. We are now on our fifth weekend of different neighbours waking us up between 2 and 6.30 am with music, parties, late talking in the garden, oh and karaoke on returning from the pub is a particular favourite.

I think midnight should be the cut-off or go to a club/bar, there's hardly a shortage of them. I'm even beginning to think parking ticket type fines should be handed out...waking up with a hangover and a ?100 fine might not seem so 'cool'.....oh and call me bitter but maybe the fine should arrive around 8am just when they are beginning their morning snooze off the night before...but I'm getting carried away!

Yeah i actually enjoy the style of music so it could be worse! The problem is the bass which is vibrating our flat. I also have to be up very early so am vaguely concerned about this going on late.

We are on the edge of Solway Road and i think the u shape of the road is acting like an amplifier bouncing the noise back so we get it on both sides of the flat.

Thanks Cora will do. I actually found some ear plugs i use when flying, which proved so effective i promptly dropped off for about an hour! It does seem to have quietened down now in any case (yes i have taken the ear plugs out!) Hilariously my partner hasn't noticed a thing as he's been ensconced in the other side of the flat listening to the cricket on his headphones all afternoon!
If all the noise polluters really only genuinely want to listen to their music loudly then they would use their headphones and leave the rest of us in peace. But I fear that this is some kind of territorial, showing-off, puerile behaviour and the only thing that can be done about this mindset is obviously some strict enforcement of the anti-pollution legislation such as immediate confiscation of equipment after one warning.

    • The programme was brilliant and makes me wary now of sea paddling as so many areas affected. My daughter was working at a bank when privatisation of utility companies were floated. Bank advised its staff that only x number of shares could be purchased by individuals as Government rules at that time. She reported that certain people were seeking double and triple shares. Bank told her to ignore the guidelines as those customers had thousands of pounds in the bank. She was so disgusted at the banks attitude she handed in her notice, She decided that the financial world was too corrupt. Two degrees later - she now works in the NHS as an OT in mental health unit.

    • Petition Urge Israeli Government to stop law allowing execution of Palestinian prisoners The UK Government must act urgently to urge the Israeli Government to stop the proposed law which would permit the execution of Palestinian Prisoners, past, present and future. More details We believe that such a law would constitute complete violation of the Geneva Convention and International Human Rights Law. UN experts have called for these proposals to be dropped. We call on the UK Government apply considerable and substantial political pressure and the leverage of its international obligations to prevent the Israeli Government from passing this law.
