We need hordes of birds, particularly swallows to feed on flying ants the moment they swarm. If it 'works' it should be a wonderful few days when fledglings put on strength after leaving the nest. Ants never got as far as my house, in the last place, although the birds would always fly through once or twice indoors, and they'd nest in nearby sheds every year.

Swifts I have seen in ED; not swallows.

I HATE them, I remember when I was pregnant 2009 and one landed in my cleavage .... And then managed to nestle down into my bra .... I freaked out!!!

Thank god it's only one day a year!!!! I now have a 1 and a 3 year old and would rather stay in the house on flying ant day than pass on my phobia to them lol

It seems odd that we haven't had them yet . Very odd .

I'm always very aware of them as I was first conscious of them about 10 days after my son was born ... so July 10th .And amazed at how regular their appearance was .

They are late this year .

( pointless and boring post I know ...blame it on the heat ! )

Seen, MrBen 'cos there have been lodes of them.

Promenading round Brixton today, there were rakes of the blighters in evidence, and speaking for myself I got a thrill every time one collided with my head, seemingly couldn't gain purchase (thanks Bio-Oil) and caromed off elsewhere.

I think they add to the fun of urban life, and you can also tell workmates with absolutely certainty there'll be a thunder storm BECAUSE flying ants have made an appearance and when it doesn't happen persuade them of the good fortune and unusual circumstance they've lived through.

Even though a thunderstorm would've cleared the air, what with this humidity...

Almost as much as bees, flying ants are our friends.

And of curse you can thrill to the sight of a person getting one in a half-nelson in order to choke the stolen drink back into their glass.

26/7 - 23:30 - Was going to correct misspelling of 'course' - decided I liked 'curse' better.

    • I trust people who act  according to their convictions regardless of what other people might think. I don't trust people  who stick with things which no longer feel right for them. I was once a fully paid up member of the Labour party, and went to local meetings. Along with a number of other people I know, I left the Labour party and  no longer go to local meetings. The Labour party has moved a long way to the right, and the Green party now represents much of what Labour used to stand for. I don't think "political rivalry" has anything to do with it. I find that a very strange choice of words.
    • I don't really understand the question in this context? I mean, yes, most of us are motivated by a degree of self interest but Rockets is not standing for election as a local councillor( is he?), nor did he stand for leadership of the Council, so in that sense does not have the power or influence to significantly affect thousands of voter lives.
    • @Sue of course it matters - 100% it matters. He was an elected official who asked the electorate to entrust the running of a local ward to him as a Labour councillor, under Labour's mandate. He also held a senior position within the Labour local leadership team. Suddenly he leaves and jumps to a political rival and gives his previous political party both barrels. This is why many people distrust all politicians and things like this just goes to confirm that.
    • We may never know, but does it actually matter?
