Just to get back to Obama's speech, it does seem like I'm the only one that feels it's been totally overinflated into some kind of iconic speech in the mould of Martin Luther King or even Winston Churchill. In actual fact it's really just a load of waffle that he delivers particularly well. He makes references to grasping challenges and dealing with tough times ahead but I could have gotten up and said that.I think he could have gotten up and read his shopping list and it would have sounded inspirational. Put him in the Spurs dressing room and see if he could motivate that bunch of losers. They're a bunch of audacity of no hopers.

Is Obama black? Is Tiger Woods black? Plenty of people would say that they aren't.

Actually, I don't care that much. But it's interesting to see the fuss these things can cause...

Well, Tiger Woods very publically declared himself "mixed race", rather than black. To which Colin Powell commented, "In America, when you look like me, you're black". It's kind of interesting how for historical reasons, society still feels the need to draw a distinction, even when the lines are blurred.

Tiger was covering his bases (fan-wise and sponsor-wise)

Powell is more of a realist

The lines are blurring for sure (a good thing IMO) but as long as there are red-necks there will be "cautious" people who have less than pink skin. Same would apply if the tables were turned I'm sure.. it just is what it is

They all Black in the same way that Andy Murray is now OFFICIALLY British where b4 he was just another Scottish average Tennis Player.

The Main Black Website thoroughly disapprooves of Inter-Racial relationships and warns Members if they post any articles or threads about this topic that they will be deleted (thats The Members as well as the thread!):)).....strangely though the Main Black icon seems to be Bob Marley ( who is also Mixed Race) and now Barack and Halle and Tiger and Lewis are regarded as Black on that Site, in general.:)

So. who knows....

"Black" means different things to different people in different places for different reasons. In Britain it seems to refer to anyone with any visible African ancestry (even if the last true African in their line lived 400 years ago.) This is very simplistic and I don't think it can really be a valid standpoint from which to formulate an opinion on global race dynamics.

    • I’ve tried to find details of surgeries being held before but not found any. The section of the Southwark website that details councillors’ surgeries says that: Your locally elected Councillors will be holding a roving surgery programme in the Dulwich Hill area to enable residents to raise any local issues. Residents will be notified by letter in advance of the date, time and specific streets/roads where the surgery will take place.  Surgeries are not held in August, on Bank Holidays, Easter or in Christmas Week.  Dulwich Hill Ward Councillors I’ve never seen any notification of surgeries being held, including on the DH councillors’ social media accounts. I don’t know if any other residents of Dulwich Hill have? Neighbouring wards all seem to have times and places posted for surgeries.
    • I wouldn't feel too bad about that. It's one of the few degree areas that you can do a BA or a BSc in, so it's a fairly wide-ranging and complex subject. Certainly Truss, Kwasi and Reeves seem to struggle with it.
    • I can't access the article - what's the gist?  I took the markets getting jittery when she was crying at PMQs to be a sign that they trusted her. But maybe it was because they were simply worried about any form of instability.  The NIC hikes have stymied the economy, which we could all see a mile off. Will a wealth tax improve things? Does anyone here think the trickle down has any impact and that chasing out the super rich will help things? Or are we just seeing off the biggest contributors to the economy? And has the Kwasi approach ever worked anywhere else?  Economics is not my strong point at all, I'd love to know others' opinions, but it seems to be she has few options, especially as the party is so divided.
    • does either of them have a surgery? probably not over summer, but I thought they had to give the opportunity for their constituents to meet them.
