Has anybody else had someone bang extremely loudly on their front door and then disappear?

About 8pm tonight. I didn't open the door, but I  called out "Who is it?" twice, then looked out of the window but there was no sign of anyone either on foot or in a car, so I think it may have been someone on a bike.

My neighbours heard it as well and didn't know what the very loud noise was.

I'm just wondering if this was a random occurrence or if it has happened to anyone else, and if so whether it's just somebody being annoying or whether they have some criminal intent.

If the banging was loud enough for neighbours to hear it seems unlikely to be someone casing your house for a burglary as they wouldn't draw attention to themselves. Suspect it's a game of knock down ginger. I played it once many decades ago, got caught, and torn off a strip!

Were you at back of house so it seemed no-one was in ?

No, I was sitting on my sofa right at the front of the house, with the living room lights on!

One possibility is that it could be a food delivery driver but at the wrong address, had that occur a few times  in the past

Yes, but they didn't wait for me to open the door, so I don't know how they could realise they were at the wrong address.

It was a massive banging, it wasn't a "here's your food" type of banging!

Yes, that seems the most probable thing, which is why I wondered if it had happened to anybody else, and if not why they picked on me 🤣😭 It was quite disconcerting, and it caused my neighbours to check all over their house as well for any signs of what had caused the massive noise.

If it happens again I would have to assume it wasn't random, and that would be a bit worrying as to the best of my knowledge I haven't upset anybody!

Yeah happened to me once I was in my kitchen about 8pm.then thumping on my front door really loud .I thought wtf .went straight to front door opened it no one there ,my gate was open .went out side to have a look .a delivery driver on a moped with a package.looked at me said sorry wrong address. I gave him a mouthful for trying to smash my door in then leaving before I opened the door plus leaving the gate open.but I felt a lot better after.

Blinking horrible. If you where a really anxious person it could cause you to be worried.   I did see on the forum a while ago that some kids were smashing people's street doors intentionally causing damage and breaking glass panels etc. Someone said it was a tik tok thing.  That fact that you never saw them sounds like it could well have been kids very quick on their feet.

The banging sounded too loud to be kids, unless they were very strong with big hands!

This happened to us (on Fellbrigg Road) about a month ago.. went outside and no-one there at all.. very confusing.. then a couple of weeks ago I heard it again at a neighbouring house.. looked out the window and saw some surprisingly young kids running off down the road... so I'm guessing it was them and nothing more sinister. (and it was very loud!)

Could be a number of people-  Sister Suzie, Brother John, Martin Luther, Phil and Don, Brother Michael,or Auntie Jean.  Paul may know better but not sure if he reads this forum.

Edited - as the thread suggested it was naughty kids rather than axe murderers then thought a bit of humour was OK, did I really have to explain this?  Although shocked that some of you didn't know the lyrics.

I hear you knocking, but you can't come in.  Knock knock who's there ?  Could this be love that's calling?

You've lost me, Malumbu!

Is it some song I should know?!

I'm in Ulverscroft Road, so it could very likely be the same kids. Thanks!

Hmm, I think it they are referencing that great Wings hit "Let em in" (Someone's knocking at the door, somebody's ringing the bell"etc..).

They may not have considered the suitability of the title for your particular thread 🤣

I think and hope it was little kids playing knock down ginger. Teenagers booting people's doors for a dare not so excusable.

I do think it might be stupid tik tok thing.   Other members of EDF said this was happening just as the schools were finishing.  The saddest thing is that some of the incidents seemed to mention younger children with older children.  I hope that the little ones are not being bullied or groomed by the slightly older children. I personally have a huge dog  and other adults in my home.  But I would not open the door to investigate.  Who knows what the next thing will be.

A few weeks ago, we had a loud kick to our door. We caught the kids on our doorbell. We went out to look around, and they had smashed the glass at a neighbour's door. Our neighbours passed the images to the police, but they were not interested.

I believe it was completely random, though, and probably a game to them, not realising how it can disturb their victims.

Sad that this happening

Sad that we no longer seem to have any community police teams to deter such events.  I don't how the police could identify these children.  Unless they are back at school and in uniforms.

Sad that these children could be being groomed by older children and crimes could.escalate.

No one wants to see them being arrested.  But a little old fashioned chat with their parents could put them off of this behaviour.

    • I know I'm a bit premature but don't want to forget through too much Chrisntas cheer! Southwark Council Christmas trees recycling arrangements 2025 - bit worrying for the future that they're emphasising the free bit. "We’ll collect and recycle your real Christmas tree for free!  Trees should not be taller than 5ft. You should chop any taller trees into smaller pieces. Remove all decorations and the pot or stand and recycle it by: putting your tree with your garden waste containers on collection day requesting a free collection if you do not have a garden waste collection  taking it to our Reuse and Recycling Centre [43 Devon Street, SE15 1AL open 08:30-16:30 Mon-Sun] If you live in a flat you must leave the tree: outside on the kerb visible for the collection crew not in a bin store" I'll add the link to the collection booking service when it opens on 22 December.
    • Most homes in East Dulwich / Good Green ward have collections on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. So no changes for them this year.  But for those few local homes with collections normally on Thursdays or Friday, with Christmas, Boxing day happening on Thursday and Friday any blue, brown or green bin collections will be delayed by two days. So Thursday 25 December collections will be on Saturday 27 December and Friday 26 December collections on Sunday 28 December. For New Years day those Thursday collections will be on the Friday 2 January and those with normal collections of Fridays that will be on Saturday 3 January. To double check when your Southwark Council rubbish, recycling, food waste, garden waste collections will be taking place please please check here - https://services.southwark.gov.uk/bins/lookup
    • Luckily I don't really any regular reason to park at Dawson Heights.  It must be very difficult for the residents I do feel for them.  Thank you for them.  I just presumed that Southwark owned the estate and would be responsible for parking enforcement there.
