There is a precedent.

McClaren is a loser, should never ever have been appointed. We all knew it would end in tears (or in his case a big pay off). Hope Benitez turns it around for them. Would be deeply sad to see such a great club drop into the Championship, but then with Ashley holding the purse strings, anything is possible.

Great club?

They've been up and down from prem to championship plenty of times in the last few decades. Not won a major trophy since the 70s (league cup), not won an FA cup since the 50s and not won the league since the 20s.

They've been a joke of a club since Keegan ballsed up their title run in the 90s. Good riddance to them and Villa.

So what does make a great club in your opinion? I'm guessing you'd claim your club is "great club" ?

You could argue that they were a great club in the middle of the last century when they won a few FA Cups or the first decade of the last century when they won the league a few times, but now they're just an average club with some very distant history and high attendances.

I would argue they are still a great club, but I'll ask again, what do you think makes a great club?

No, we're in the same category. We're nothing like a 'great club' as it stands. If we embark on a period of success now, then perhaps we could be considered such, as we have at times in the past. I would say we're closer than Newcastle though.

If I had to define what makes a great club, I guess it would be; global and domestic fanbase (yes, it's a measure, but only a small one), recent (last couple of decades) success at home and abroad, youth/academy system and well run financially etc. The board are just as much part of the club as the players, management and fans.

For me, the only current great Premier League clubs are Man United, Arsenal and at a stretch Liverpool. They built their relatively recent successes on something other than massive debt. I know United now have large debt, but during their period of real success it was built on youth.

    • I’m in exactly the same position.  They badgered me for ages to have a water meter fitted.  I’d prevaricated simply because it’s so tedious dealing with these people but eventually gave in when the communications became increasingly frequent and aggressive and it was done in March 2023. I just assumed I’d then be charged on actual consumption but I received an email this morning with details of the latest price increase and it said, “Since your property doesn’t have a water meter, your bill is calculated in advance based on fixed rates rather than water usage”.  I’m sure they’ve realised I’d be paying much less if they billed me on actual consumption but have not gone out of their way to inform me.  Trawling through their website, for me anyway, is an unutterably tedious chore, but I think I’ll now have to work up the energy over the weekend to pick up the phone on Monday morning and have a word with them.
    • Great Service again from Andy.  Contacted him with a couple of issues with toilet cistern and shower.  He came over and sorted it all out quickly. Good advice given, reasonable charge for the jobs.  Highly recommend Andy!
    • Just seen this.  Your post was a bit unnecessary.  I was simply responding to the previous post that children should be cycling on the pavement. But as you say I know shed loads about transport.  Not to the depths that some go down to the minutia.  Some call me the space cowboy.  Some call me the gangster of love.  I think of myself as the people's poet.  You have to laugh at yourself. Echoing what DKH said, we weren't there, you don't know the parent was making a snide remark, My favourite Dulwich parent story was a few years ago were friends when we were in the Herne garden a few years ago, who let their children run riot.  Bless.  One decided to turn the hose on spraying some poor drinkers.  Now most of us would be mortified, but the friends welcomed their child's creativity.
