Saw this first when out walking with my granddaughters a few years back.

We had already had a discussion about why there was a North, West and East Dulwich but not South Dulwich, and then we came across a map or sign (can't remember which) on a footpath with South Dulwich on it.

I've lived round here for decades, and never knew!

Now, there's West Norwood, South Norwood .... North Norwood wouldn't make sense, but why no East Norwood?!

Exactly - it is an unspoken rule. South Dulwich isn’t allowed. It should be East Gipsy Hill or North Crystal Palace.

The sign might have been at St Stephen's Church on College Road, next to Sydenham Hill Station. There's a footpath along the side of the church, above the railway tunnel, connecting College Road with Kingswood Estate. That's the only reference to "South Dulwich" I've ever seen, and it's been there for years.

Yes, I think it was there, or at least in that general area, though I have no idea why we would have been walking  there, unless we had been in the woods and decided to walk home a different way!

It might not have a tube station, but South Acton is definitely a place

South Acton Station is on the Richmond branch of London Overground, formerly the North London line. District line trains used to run there until 1959, I think it was a shuttle service from Acton Town.

This is the church website, with the sign I mentioned in the first photograph.

Interesting... I couldn't find any districts where all four compass points are used, but now I have!

Harrow East is a constituency, but is it a place?!

Upper Dulwich

Oh God, I can already visualise this in an estate agent window:

"nestled in the heart of the Upper Dulwich quadrant is this modest 7 bedroom 5 bathroom apartment...."

And then overhearing a conversation, maybe at a posh cafe, along the lines of "well, I live in Upper Dulwich you know...yes it's a charming little place, only the 7 bedrooms but we get by... Nanny of course has the attic room..."

Perhaps this comes from a proposal by former Dulwich Society chair of Transport sub-committee Alastair Hanton to rename Sydenham Hill station South Dulwich. The argument being the station name doesn't reflect where it is.

The train operating company told him it would cost £100,000 and that they had no plans to make this name change.

But The station is near Sydenham Hill...In fact nearer there than Dulwich surely

    • Hello, Recently there have been various comments made on the forum which have resulted in heated discussions being had. I for one, hold up my hand and wanted to personally thank whoever is keeping the forum going.. remember when it was likely to close. We are all adults and should known when it is right to continue or just ignore or if really feel it necessary comment via pm. I have had a long relationship with the forum and have bought, sold, offered advice and in deed made friends on the forum over the years. It is a public forum after all and everyone is entitled to express their opinion and is also free. I am not as tech minded as most but with the season of good will approaching and-knowing in this economic climate how many people are  struggling, I  thought it would be a lovely idea, to perhaps set up a just giving page to raise funds for a local charity who might appreciate a contribution towards their Christmas festivities… On a practical side, might just be to complicated to administer as I am sure all have charities that we support so my other thought was not me, as I am useless but to set up a just giving page and whatever monies are raised, perhaps contribute to the festivities that use to be run by local shops or whatever.. Maybe even use a local church hall and just make it special for perhaps folk that find it difficult to access events or no access for say wheel chair users.. guess really, one is looking for guidance from the church and of course volunteers. Shoot me down if you must or feel the need but this is my view and no, sadly I won’t be around in the months before Christmas but can help remotely.
    • Hi all Does anyone know someone who can make a window seat cushion and cover? See image of window seat. Thank you.
    • Don't know why but it seems like there have been impromptu fireworks since early September. At one point I even wondered if there was a shooting range or something like that over Dulwich Hamlet way- the direction where the firework sounds seem to be coming from? Is there some kind of new, fireworks craze going on and where are people getting them, out of season?
