From Southwark News: https://southwarknews.co.uk/area/dulwich/londis-divides-opinion-in-leafy-dulwich/

Plans to open a new Londis until 1am every day of the week have divided residents living in Dulwich.

Plans have been submitted to turn two empty units located at 4 Melbourne Grove, East Dulwich into a Londis which would open from 6am until 1am from Monday through to Sunday.

The site was previously home to Big Belly’s, a fast food takeaway shop and a physiotherapy clinic.

Southwark Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee will decide on the plans at a meeting next Tuesday (August 19). Under the original plans, alcohol would also be sold from 6am to 1am every day of the week however, the Metropolitan Police raised concerns over the impact this could have on the surrounding residential area.

The papers are at https://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=172&MId=8334.   I had thought of watching the thing myself online, but my diary secretary let me down.

Yes keep it open late,  a nice parklet and seating for those who need a few tinnies late at night or first thing in the morning and then a nice quiet lie down un-disturbed from annoying traffic.

All that extra recently extended pavement, plus late night shopping and somewhere to buy booze, means this can become an even more social area. The seating is already in place.

It'll also be somewhere all the students living in the enormous student housing bloc can use.

Yea! The students will love somewhere to buy fags, booze and take out chicken, it will be a hot spot for socialising late into the night. I’m sure the house prices will reflect the new late night social zone.

I am just hoping the Londis retains the pick and mix of the original on Lordship Lane! A drunken late night bag of lemon sherbets, crusty Jelly Babies and some nondescript thing covered in chocolate was always a favourite of mine!

Yes, it is just that the local demographic is soon to have a large shift and more late night shopping catering for student needs is likely to be very popular. Presumably the massive student lodgings development plans for Melbourne Grove will have catalysed the Londis application. Wasn't there also an application for a late night bar or club at some point round there?

Still, all this will help turn Melbourne Grove North into a real 'vibrant, urban destination' and 'town centre' and, for sure, we can expect lots and lots of e- bikes and scooters to be 'parked' around the place.

What makes me laugh is that not so long ago the smaller housing development in the same place was being marketed as wonderful select family homes in quiet, leafy MG, with a 'villagey' feel.

As a taster for where all this might lead, has anyone noticed the crumbling brick facing on the railway development, built not so long ago? You throw 'em up and they soon start falling down. The developers make loadsa money and Councillors get to tick their boxes.

The letters against the opening of Londis complain about successful small independents- Drop, Norbert’s and the lovely coffee shop.

I’m glad I don’t live in this sad, ‘gated’ community. If they could - they would add a gate and a private security presence to throw out any unwanted individuals.

    • There used to be a flock of long tailed tits in the area up East Dulwich Grove past the health centre (going from ED) . No idea if they are still around there. Herons in Peckham Rye Park near the pond (and various ducks and geese) . I agree Merlin is a great app, better than other bird identification apps I have tried . You could join the RSPB? They have a good and informative quarterly magazine.  If you have a garden or a balcony, deffo put out feeders if you can. Different kinds of  feeders and food suit different birds. Vine House Farm is a great source of bird food (and feeders),  particularly if you have space to store it (guarded from mice!) in bulk. Good quality,  and speedy free delivery with no minimum order requirement. I don't have any connection with them, in case I sound like an ad! https://www.vinehousefarm.co.uk/
