Jeremy
If it's a toss-up between modern man-made arbitrary borders, vs historical man-made arbitrary borders, I'll go with the former. edhistory
You are missing the point. This is not about man-made boundaries, new or old. It's about the landscape and Nunhead and East Dulwich sharing the same valley.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/36648-whats-happened-to-the-bishop/page/2/#findComment-681712 Share on other sites

StraferJack
People love to bash th.. no, no I can?t do itI know lots of people who don?t like the bishop, but I know many more who do. Any of the pubs on the Lane can, on a Saturday night be populated by the sorts of crowds described in the OP ? but then I keep well away from the Lane on weekend nightsBut I?m a regular punter there during early week evenings and weekend days and the current crew (Oonagh, Rodrigo et al) couldn?t be nicer or more helpful. The OP is unclear ? seems to say they are a regular visitor whilst simultaneously suggesting they hadn?t been for a while. In which case starting a thread on one night seems a bit harsh Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/36648-whats-happened-to-the-bishop/page/2/#findComment-681729 Share on other sites
Otta
Post codes / boundaries / whatever, the Gowlett along with Bellenden Road and that whole area are in bloody Peckham! As, I suspect, is edhistory's house. As for The Bishop, there is just something about the actual space that has always just left me a bit cold. Girl82
If you live in SE15 you live in Peckham, not East Dulwich. Ten years ago people trying to sell their house in SE15 may have tried to say otherwise, but nowadays saying you live in Peckham probably has more cachet anyway! The Gowlett clearly thinks of itself as Peckham anyway, judging from their website. And so they should, because they are located in Peckham!! StraferJack
I suppose the public/politicians also join in with "postcode lottery" with regards to hospitals etc"It's a lottery! Manda
Agree, it's too dark! I feel like a mole when I go there..... also agree that ED is much, much quieter than it used to be, seems as though the buzz has gone. Otta
Lots of people I know that are a few years younger than me (so in their late 20s now) who used to live in and go out in ED a few years ago have moved on to Brixton or North of the River *spits*. Jeremy
But... Brixton has always been much more lively than ED in terms of bars, clubs, gigs, and even restaurants. It's a nightlife destination, and has been for a long time. I don't think anyone ever thought "ED isn't as banging as it used to be, let's move to Brixton..." *Bob*
If you've been looking to East Dulwich to deliver 'the buzz' at any time over the last, say, decade - then you don't exactly qualify as a thrillseeker as such. To quote (myself) 'that's what other parts of London are for'. LondonMix
Agree. Also, I think the parts of SE15 we have been speaking about are Peckham no least of all because the longstanding residents of that area believe it is. Otta
Indeed, the parish church on the edge of East Dulwich. Bomb it up Lordship Lane and you'll find the old St Peter's at the other end.I used to know someone who lived on Adys Road more or less next door to St John's, and they very much saw themselves as being from Peckham.Historical maps will show you all sorts. The Oval is Surrey's cricket ground for God's sake. East Dulwich Road and Forest Hill Road are basically the edges of East Dulwich.I do remember them planning to change (I think) electoral boundaries in the 90s, and lots of businesses at the Goose Green end of Lordship Lane were up in arms at the thought of finding themselves in Peckham all of a sudden.
