Costs of carpetting hall

Pugwash

Recommended Posts

We decided that we wanted a central runner for our stairs and hallway as this seemed more appropriate for our Victorian house, Went to the carpet shop in LL yesterday and was quoted ?85 and ?110 per linear metre!!. Since we calculated that 18 metres were needed - the cost seemed out of proportion. That was without the underlay and fitting.

Anyone had this done at a cheaper cost? Around 8 metres are needed for the stairs and the other 10 for hallway and landings.

I had a similar quote, but by chance came across the Red Carpet Flooring Company in Windsor.

They carpeted our front room and made a runner for our staircase for the same price as we had been quoted for a runner only.

Peter is the owner and we found him to be incredibly helpful.

Good luck!

another recommendation for EJ carpets - they did my hall carpet. They were friendly, helpful and mindful of my budget. I can't speak highly enough of them. They lent me some samples to take home so that I could make a final decision and all the staff were friendly and knew their stuff.

Thanks for your recommendation will have a look on Saturday. I would expect to pay a decent price for stair carpet in view of the wear.

Lowlander - did you have runner in your hallway and landing as well as the stairs? We have one long flight (13 steps) plus short flight (4 steps) but about 4-5 metres hall way in between, plus landings,

We are using Warehouse Carpets Direct, Brockley Rise. Their prices, service and selection have been excellent so far. Much cheaper than EJ carpets actually. Very friendly owners who seem to really take an interest in your whole project and happy to work around awkward timings, other tradespeople etc.
We were planning on using EJ Carpets (they did our bathroom vinyl and were great) and Gary has been really helpful. Asked Westminster to come measure and they've disappeared on us - may go around this weekend and have a look too. Will check Warehouse Carpets too - though they seem small/have less selection than EJ Carpets - will give them the benefit of the doubt based on your review bluesuperted.
Went to EJ Carpets - what a great selection they had - we explained to Gary what we wanted and he advised is to look at the samples that had a variety of widths. We are going for stair runners and wall to wall in the hallway and landing. Good prices. They are coming to measure up during the week - many thanks for the recommendation
Thanks all! Carpet hunting today for our staircase runner. Went round to EJ Carpets and Warehouse Carpet Direct. The former was considerably expensive compared to the latter. Both were really helpful and friendly to boot. Am veering towards natural fibres like Sisal, Jute and Coir though but neither of them do those. Off I headed to Blackheath Flooring Studio and they quoted me roughly the same - supply and fit - as the cheapest carpet in EJ Carpets ?450 to ?500. Might as well bite the bullet. Blackheath Flooring Studio are coming round to measure up next week. Let you know how it goes ...

Affirmative Pugwash ... EJ and WCD advised the same to me.

In fact, been getting a mixed bag of opinions on the question of Sisal or in fact any natural fibre on stairs so I did some research (spoke to various flooring specialists, feedback from people who actually have them on their stairs and advice from the Independent Flooring Guild).

For anyone interested, I found the following:

? Seagrass not suitable - gets polished and slippery with wear and tear.

? Jute not suitable - for light domestic use only, will wear thin quickly.

? Coir is suitable - but is very rough underfoot, ideal door matting material.

? Sisal is suitable - hardest wearing of the plant fibres, will not polish with wear like Seagrass and facilitates friction for grip due to its coarse characteristics. Some people say that it may be slippery with leather under soles.

Conclusion in summary:

It's a hit and miss! Depends entirely on your lifestyle, how many pets or children you have crawling around, etc. Some people have it in pieces after 2 years and others have it in fab condition after 25 years. I note that the cons are that they stain easily, are affected by humidity and expand and contract with water. The major consensus is that one needs a pro fitter to install. This is not a DIY job.

I would really like a flat weave that will last the distance on our staircase - hard to find in something like wool and polypropelene - so i guess I am going to go for the Sisal and hope for the best.

Sorry for the long essay!

It's been a long confusing weave of carpet tales and I was just voicing out my jumble of thoughts.

Hope this helps someone anyway :)

Weilan, I have been following your thread as I am in exactly the same position - deliberating on what type of carpet to put on my stairs. As I have cats I am somewhat limited and need to avoid wool loop carpets. In my previous house I had a great flat weave wool carpet but am having difficulty in finding something similar. I have been researching sisal and have looked at several companies (i.e. Crucial, Alternative, Fibre, Kersaint). My challenge is finding a fitter who will fit it. Jim Cox (recommended on the forum) is booked up solid for weeks. I went to EJ Carpets and also Nunhead Carpets and both won't touch sisal. I'm in 2 minds about opting for sisal because of its potential for staining.

If you do find a good fitter at a reasonable price who will fit sisal, I'd been keen to know how you get on.

    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
    • This reminds me of a situation a few years ago when a mate's Dad was coming down and fancied Franklin's for Christmas Day. He'd been there once, in September, and loved it. Obviously, they're far too tuned in to do it, so having looked around, £100 per head was pretty standard for fairly average pubs around here. That is ridiculous. I'd go with Penguin's idea; one of the best Christmas Day lunches I've ever had was at the Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel. And it was BYO. After a couple of Guinness outside Franklin's, we decided £100 for four people was the absolute maximum, but it had to be done in the style of Franklin's and sourced within walking distance of The Gowlett. All the supermarkets knock themselves out on veg as a loss leader - particularly anything festive - and the Afghani lads on Rye Lane are brilliant for more esoteric stuff and spices, so it really doesn't need to be pricey. Here's what we came up with. It was considerably less than £100 for four. Bread & Butter (Lidl & Lurpak on offer at Iceland) Mersea Oysters (Sopers) Parsnip & Potato Soup ( I think they were both less than 20 pence a kilo at Morrisons) Smoked mackerel, Jerseys, watercress & radish (Sopers) Rolled turkey breast joint (£7.95 from Iceland) Roast Duck (two for £12 at Lidl) Mash  Carrots, star anise, butter emulsion. Stir-fried Brussels, bacon, chestnuts and Worcestershire sauce.(Lidl) Clementine and limoncello granita (all from Lidl) Stollen (Lidl) Stichelton, Cornish Cruncher, Stinking Bishop. (Marks & Sparks) There was a couple of lessons to learn: Don't freeze mash. It breaks down the cellular structure and ends up more like a French pomme purée. I renamed it 'Pomme Mikael Silvestre' after my favourite French centre-half cum left back and got away with it, but if you're not amongst football fans you may not be so lucky. Tasted great, looked like shit. Don't take the clementine granita out of the freezer too early, particularly if you've overdone it on the limoncello. It melts quickly and someone will suggest snorting it. The sugar really sticks your nostrils together on Boxing Day. Speaking of 'lost' Christmases past, John Lewis have hijacked Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' for their new advert. Bastards. But not a bad ad.   Beansprout, I have a massive steel pot I bought from a Nigerian place on Choumert Road many years ago. It could do with a work out. I'm quite prepared to make a huge, spicy parsnip soup for anyone who fancies it and a few carols.
    • Nothing to do with the topic of this thread, but I have to say, I think it is quite untrue that people don't make human contact in cities. Just locally, there are street parties, road WhatsApp groups, one street I know near here hires a coach and everyone in the street goes to the seaside every year! There are lots of neighbourhood groups on Facebook, where people look out for each other and help each other. In my experience people chat to strangers on public transport, in shops, waiting in queues etc. To the best of my knowledge the forum does not need donations to keep it going. It contains paid ads, which hopefully helps Joe,  the very excellent admin,  to keep it up and running. And as for a house being broken into, that could happen anywhere. I knew a village in Devon where a whole row of houses was burgled one night in the eighties. Sorry to continue the off topic conversation when the poor OP was just trying to find out who was open for lunch on Christmas Day!
    • We went to Chern Thai for lunch on Saturday, as we have done quite often, and they were closed, with no sign of life. The sign in the window still says Saturday 12-3, and there was no indication that they would be closed. Can anybody shed any light? We went to Chilli and Garlic on Zenoria Street instead. Their falafel salad bowl is amazing (and amazing value!) but we had been looking forward to a Pad Thai and a pint of Singha! ETA: I am reviving this thread because it is/was  specifically about Chern Thai's opening times!
