The native oyster is best during the winter, hence the instruction only to eat oysters when there is an R in month. The most famous are from Whitstable, Colchester and Helford, in season from September to April. Some say the R myth arose from an area where oysters spawn in the summer season, and when spawning they taste fatty, soft and inedible.

Pacific oysters are not as esteemed as natives but turning down a plate of spanking fresh Pacifics is simply misplaced snobbery. They are more elongated, with longer narrower shells, are raised in hatcheries such as the one at Butley and, thank goodness, are in season all year.

It's also because there are more bacteria in the water during the summer months, so there's a higher risk of getting food poisoning from a summer oyster - it's not necessarily a reflection on the restaurant if you get ill from eating them, although if they're not very fresh or not kept properly refrigerated, obviously the bacteria can multiply through that as well.

    • Dog kennel isn't a great name for a school. I agree that it's ridiculous for the name to put anyone off going there, but don't see any issue with them rebranding if the parents and children prefer a new name. The school is surrounded by historical 'groves' (reflected in the names of Camberwell Grove, Grove park and Grove Vale for example), so it's not a totally random name.
    • It might help if there are body cams to record evidence and a presence maybe a deterrent but I very much doubt a park warden would intervene with obnoxious and violent thugs - children or not. We need police for that.
    • I had a leaky toilet cistern and Niko came out the same day and not only fixed the leak but thoroughly cleaned off the years of calcium build-up. His attention to detail was matched by his kind humanity. The result was a completely renovated toilet which has never worked more efficiently as well as 'service with a smile'. MANY THANKS NIKO!!!
    • I am trying to find out about people's experiences of the 4+ and 7+ assessments. I am a teacher and have a wealth of experience tutoring for theses assessments (including my own son), but it's always good to keep on top of things as they always make tweaks to them. TIA!
