mniz
Hi all, I was wondering why we don’t have Christmas lights on Lordship lane? Down to forest hill, there are a couple. Any reason why we don’t? It would really change the atmosphere in these gloomy days. first mate
You'd think with all that parking fee surplus swishing around they could afford to do something? I see Vanity Square has its Christmas tree and lights already. We have always had lights in the past. Perhaps Cllr McAsh is against such things? Penguin68
To be fair, the lights we used to have in Lordship Lane were dreadful. They were actively depressing, which isn't a good look for Christmas lights. 2 3 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/371083-christmas-lights/#findComment-1729664 Share on other sites
Jenijenjen
In many places it's the businesses of the area who pay for Christmas lights. (That was the sound of LL businesses falling to the ground in a faint at the suggestion) The Christmas tree in Dulwich Square was paid for by a crowdfunder Edited December 8, 2025 by Jenijenjen 2 1 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/371083-christmas-lights/#findComment-1729665 Share on other sites

For small independents that's a bigger ask, decorating, when they do their own premises is cost enough. And we're normally happy not to have the big corporates in LL. Speaking for myself I'm very happy M&S, Superdrug, Pret and, in the last century, Sainsbury's arrived and judging from the business they do I'm not alone. Cyclemonkey
You need to get your collecting tin out. Here in Forest Hill we have a very smartly decorated Christmas tree, funded mainly by local traders. Maybe some of those poor wretches afflicted with £2m houses could drop a few fivers in. 1 1 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/371083-christmas-lights/#findComment-1729700 Share on other sites

CPR Dave
Could just decorate the palm tree on the middle of the roundabout. There are palm trees in Bethlehem, and palms symbolize Jesus's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Some accounts (in the Quran for example) even have Mary giving birth to Jesus leaning against / sitting under a palm tree. Some gorilla Xmassing of our holy roundabout palm tree might be fun. 5 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/371083-christmas-lights/#findComment-1729724 Share on other sites

Or have something with lights on Goose Green? 17 hours ago, HeadNun said: Could just decorate the palm tree on the middle of the roundabout. And there has been a small Christmas tree on Goose Green some years. I think it was connected with a primary school? CPR Dave
I think the council could make more of that too. Sell a ticketed event with a local celebrity turning the lights on, followed by a street party with christmas carols and a christmas pop song cover band.
