My little brother and sister (aged about 4 and 6 at the time) ran headlong into the Queen Mother on Harley Street once and almost knocked her over. She had two body guards with her who just kind of looked bemused and surprised, attack by small children presumably not covered in training.

My grandmother did a proper curtsey and said "I'm so sorry M'am"

All very odd.

"I hate royals"

I dunno, The Queen's done alright by the country (in both senses of the word mind you, she's not short of a penny, despite recent protestations to the contrary), but frankly she's done a pretty good job. Better her than David Beckham, Peter Mandleson or god forbid, Tony Blair as president.

But in Spain good old Juan Carlos has to be one of the most respected people around. From effectively being a political prisoner (a pretty well off one who was groomed for power admittedly) he actually steered the country expertly through a difficult transition to democracy and at no time did he grasp for power himself.

Spain in the late 70's could easily have been Yugoslavia in the early 90s. The difference was one had Juan Carlos, the other Slobbo.

Mind you, his son's a bit of an idiot, something to do with being called Prince Charles I guess ;)

Met them all except the Queen.

Phillip - good guy, like a slightly eccentric uncle who gives you a large G&T when you're 16.

Andrew - w***** and a very average helicopter pilot. You have to be pretty bad not to be selected for promotion when you're the only Royal Prince in the Navy.

Edward - t**

Charles - uptight with a very slightly average intelligence. Couldn't navigate and once spilt my beer in the bar.

Anne - good egg. Not beautiful I'd agree but she has spirit and opinions. Gets things done.

loong time ago was working in the basement of Sandersons Oxford street. Was a bunch of older jamaican guys worked there too.

used to have lots of chilli in their lunchtime kebabs and smoke a bit of weed down there whilst sending the wall paper up the hatch as the rolls were bought. one day the main elevator came down to our floor by mistake.we were there stinking the place out with our feet up on the table. the doors opened and there was the queen mother and a couple of aides. realising their error they pressed the button. as the doors closed the old lady grinned from ear to ear at us, looking at her going 'ooooh s*&t!'. She didnt say anything to anyone about it. We were expecting a grilling. never happened.

    • A shout out for Mark, owner of Pure Plumbers. 07970 971510 They're well established in the Sevenoaks area, but have recently started doing more work in SE London.  Did some v quick and efficient bathroom and boiler fixes for me; have also seen some of the bathrooms he's built, which have a nice attention to detail. • Totally agree regarding not supporting chains. Gail’s was fine but last time I went in Feb this year, actually walked out Fayetteville looking at menu and waiting 15 minutes to even get glass of water and not busy at all. Staff gone down hill - sooner it goes the better… Always prefer to support non chains - so many lovely places with good food to choose from with pleasant staff who know about customer service and sadly, non English which says a lot for our culture, pubs are also becoming abit of a hit and miss affair but maybe just unlucky. At the end of the day all about the chef. Still abit unclear where new place is located - is it down the road from Goose Green where parade of shops are before Peckham Rye?
    • Surely only where the local businesses offer clear advantages, otherwise you are rewarding what should be failure. I want to be served by a better bakery than Gail's, not a worse but local independent one. Certainly give a local independent some time to get the offer right, but don't buy goods which are worse and or more expensive just because the outlet isn't a chain.
    • Let’s just boycott all chains in favour of local businesses.  Places like Gail’s popping up everywhere has a very damaging impact on small businesses. It’s just the same as the new empanadas place but on a bigger scale. I’ll say it a million times more, we hold the power with our choices. Let’s use our power to look after ourselves and our environment (which includes small local family businesses). And yes, I also love Chacarero.
