I got served in the end and the beer was great but...

I've worked behind busy bars. What you have to do is look the punter in the eye and say, 'Be with you in a minute mate,' and then the customer relaxes, no matter how long it takes.

Judging by the trade in the Ivy House today, it's a huge success, but five behind the bar and they couldn't keep up. Nice people but not professionals. Terrific band though.

So, after a while we went to the Herne. Three bar staff all of them way too busy to actually serve drinks, mopping the floor, washing glasses, eyes down despite waving my twenty like a semaphore flag for about five minutes. 'I shouldn't be serving behind a bar you know, I've got a degree in psychology,'

When I finally got his attention, two pints of Guinness and a Prosecco was sixteen quid.

If I want to be ignored I'll stay at home.

Interesting, given that the Herne (and the Palmerston, the Honor Oak, the Ladywell Tavern and the Half Moon) was supposedly recently acquired by a company called Britannia (allegedly funded by a former member of Boyzone), and they supposedly shipped out all the old staff and got good ones in...

I say supposedly to all this, because my source is someone who says he's about to take over the kitchen at the Herne, so presumably he knows whereof he speaks, but somehow it all seems too weird to be true...especially the bit about the Palmerston.

Blythe Hill Tavern is brilliant.

Had a bad experience in the Fox on the Hill.

I worked behind bars, you don't need to be rude.

Dunno about the SE22 pubs apart from the Rose. New barmaid was being taught to pour a pint. This dishwash stuff came out. I said I'll need a fresh pint then. The senior barmaid told me off ("it's her first night"). Funny.

I managed to pour pints first time - although Guinness took a little longer

Reminds me of a few years ago at the Palmerston when I sent a bottle of wine back that was corked (*really* badly). Another member of staff sent it back to our table and said it was the 'style of wine'.

Staff like that you don't need.

(And, yes, I sent it back again.)
