Well exactly.

Just like TV. You just have to look for it - just like with music.

I think the majority of telly viewers are lazy. I include myself there. I have fifty potentally fascinating, informative and entertaining programmes I've never seen before backed-up on my recorder which for some reason I didn't watch because 'The Great Escape' was on. Again.

BBC4's viewing figures are a great example disparity that exists between how many people claim TV is dumbed-down and how many of those put their money where their mouth is and actually watch something challenging.

It's also my opinion (and I'm not pointing da finger at you, giggirl - more at some sans-tv friends of mine) that a good many people who 'don't watch tv' wear it as some kind of a badge of honour - and so are in need of a good kick up their 'we do other things, actually' arses.

I do have many issues with TV (lowest-common-denominator programming being pretty high up there) but really the main thing is that I ditched TV when it went face first into the reality-TV trough. Reality TV is part and parcel of this awful celebrity-culture cult that is sucking the life out of culture today. I don?t want Jordan and Peter Andre in my living room and I am sad that so many people obviously DO want them.

If you switch on a TV, even just to watch the news, you are exposed to the inanities of BB/ X factor / Shagging Island / I?m a Celebrity (says who?) Get Me Out Of Here etc ? there just isn?t any escaping them once the box is switched on. I?m not good at blocking these things out.

Bob ? I?m sure you?re spot on about BBC4's viewing figures. That?s something else to be depressed about! I?m not wearing a badge of honour; I just truly did vote with my feet and ditched the box. I still watch DVDs.

Fair enough... there are only so many things you can make an effort with. I'm particularly bad at making an effort to listen to new music - something I plan to get around to changing (providing The Great Escape isn't on. Again.)

It's just that 'not listening to new music' means I'm lazy and fancy giving (insert name of cool album here) another spin. But not having a TV seems to represent something altogether more statement-y.

AKA landfill indie

I was once tantalisingly close to pitching on a pilot for a show provisionally entitled "The Gay Team".

It could have been a biggie, but apparently the commissioning editor for the channel in question wasn't so keen.

Alan: That?s alright, that?s OK. ?Inner-City Sumo?.

Tony: What?s that?

Alan: We take fat people from the inner cities, put them in big nappies, and then get them to throw each other out of a circle that we draw with chalk on the ground.

Tony: No, no it?s a bad idea.

Alan: Very cheap to make.

Tony: No.

Alan: Do it in a pub car park.

Tony: No.

Alan: If you don?t do it, Sky will.

Tony: Well I?ll live with that. Is that it?

Alan: Well, no, no. Cooking in prison.

Tony: Oh, no.

Alan: ?A Partridge Amongst The Pigeons?.

Tony: What?s that?

Alan: Well, it?s just a title, I mean? erm, well, opening sequence, me, in Trafalgar Square, feeding the pigeons, going "Oh God!"

Tony: No, I?m sorry, no! Stop!

Alan: Whoa, whoa, whoa, erm, ?Youth Hosteling with Chris Eubank?.

Tony: No!

....

Alan: ?Monkey tennis??

    • I also wonder if all this, recently events and so many u turns is going to also be the end of Kier Starmer.
    • And I replied: Mandelson and Trump have much in common. They are both shallow, vulgar and vain. They both fetishise wealth and power, irrespective of who holds it or how it was accumulated. They were both close friends and associates of the late Jeffrey Epstein and have moved in the same circles, as Ghislaine Maxwell’s address book allegedly confirms. Recognising another who is utterly transactional and lacking in a moral compass, there’s every chance of “Petie” fitting right in Mar-a-Largo. That Starmer couldn’t anticipate that Mandelson’s past behaviour would be problematic just proves how inept this government is.
    • Can't agree with that because he is a superb communicator - a really smart and  smooth talker. He studied PPE at Oxford and was communications director for Labour for many years.  Setting aside the "minor"  indiscretions during his time in government he has all the smoothness and ability to flatter Trump without appearing obsequious. Plus he can manage and exploit  Trump’s ego. He is highly polished socially, comfortable in elite circles, skilled at making personal connections. He can flatter and disarm, which is a useful tactic with Trump, who responds well to personal respect and praise. As a former EU Trade Commissioner and Cabinet minister, Mandelson understands international relations, trade, and diplomacy. He knows how to frame issues in terms of “wins” that Trump could claim credit for. I honestly hope that he survives.
    • He is toast  he should never have been appointed  and starmer flannelling about all of this shows exceptionally poor judgement  a disgrace all around
