Hello everyone,

I've been trying to sort out our family wills for the first time, and have been directed to this charitable scheme running during November. Seems like a fabulous idea, so here is a link for anyone else interested...

Just a shame that none of our local solicitors are listed!

I would have thought you could use a solicitor pretty much anywhere, these days. From the perspective of having to deal with an intestate estate, you will make things so much easier for your loved ones if you leave a will. It just adds a layer of stress on top of grief. Don't just put it off like I have!

People, please don't use 'charity' options for writing your Wills.

Written into the small print are usually some surprisingly fat sums as percentages for them. Solicitors do this too, more often than not.

For a better service altogether, one which won't drive your beneficiaries mad or cause them to waste years and fortunes on disputes, this professional organisation is where to start:

Hello, I have to stand up for Will Aid - I disagree totally that there are percentages written into the wills for the solicitors as Fl0wer says. We did Will Aid last year, a couples will costing about 150 pounds I think. we went to Ewings in Penge - only a 15 min drive from East Dulwich and saw Jonathan. He was brilliant, gave us free advice, for example on how we could make sure our children were looked after if we both died. Will took a couple of weeks then we were invited back to sign it - and NOWHERE in the small print did it say anything about a percentage. We just paid a flat fee to charity (can't remember the exact amount but around ?150) and we got the wills. Ewings keep a copy free of charge as well. Can't recommend it enough and saved us a fortune.

Hmm, I don't think that's how will aid works. You make a donation to charity instead of paying normal solicitor fees (something like ?90 for a single or ?140 for a pair of wills is the suggested donation).

We're just in the process of getting ours drawn up via a solicitor we found on the will aid website, so will report back any hidden sums to charities/others when we get the first draft.

Solicitors taking part in the will aid month get really busy and usually only allocate a certain number of appointments to clients coming via this route- we made our appointment in October and had to ring a few before we got an appointment.

    • Frothy coffee? Not really my bag. A double espresso and a Marlboro Red? It's the breakfast of champions. The only dark drink with a creamy head which should ever be drunk by a man of my age is Guinness. I've also become lactose intolerant recently, meaning I get very impatient around milk. You make a fair point, but those legal channels are available for them to recover their repair, and legal, costs and, as I said: "It's up to them if they [Southwark] want to do that, of course." There's three or four grands worth of Cat N write-off, wrapped round a post there (more, if it's broken down for parts) causing problems. If they can't be arsed sorting that, I'm not holding my breath. Even Southwark couldn't screw their numbers up enough to make shifting the post back through circa 15 degrees more than a couple of grand, so there's a drink in it for everyone. It's a bit 'leany' just now, yeah, but I haven't noticed anyone having to limbo under it to get to Superdrugs. Or, they could make a feature of it. Pisa has made a fortune out of not sorting the underpinnings of their tower. Let's say it's an installation by someone called, I don't know, Bangsy, and it's a physical reminder that SE22 cannot deny its proximity to Peckham, Camberwell & Brixton. It's about the only thing that would get me back into The Bishop since the many dark afternoons of the soul I spent with Clarence*, the world's most depressed Weimaraner. *RIP big fella. You know exactly where the Green Cross Code Man was in 1973: less than a hundred yards away, on North Cross Road. https://youtu.be/C-XwVVMiCO4?si=rt8kQllev0t1Lgdi For some years, I found it quite difficult to go into The Forrester's after many long afternoons of the soul with Dave Prowse* (The Green Cross Code Man). *RIP big fella. • Loving the arm chair speculation on here  Blimey how long before this gets spun out to be a drug dealer welding a sawn off whilst driving away from a smash and grab at the coop cash machine flipped his car and landed on a bollard type post  Where's the green cross code man when you need him ?
    • If you haven't already watched this totally shocking docudrama on Channel 4 then make sure you watch it and tell everyone you know to watch It It lays bare the scandalous, harmful and lethal  (in some cases) behaviour of the water companies since privatisation.  I for one didn't realise that the water companies pay the regulator/environment agency to regulate them in one mega conflict of interest.   This is as shocking as the post office/postmasters scandal with even more far reaching consequences.
