Our normal blue bin recycling was due Christmas Day. I checked out the Southwark website for the alternate date and it says next collection due 8 Jan - we are busting to the rafters with recycling and normal rubbish and food. I sort of imagined they might come tomorrow (Fri 27th) instead. Anyone in the know?

Thanks.

Well sainsburys cardboard recycle centre is full but I had a glimmer of false hope when I saw the recycling truck come down my street this morning, I took out all my boxes but actually they just emptied the block of flats recycling directly opposite me and then drove away!! Now I am perplexed. Am going to give the council a ring on Monday and see when it is scheduled for.

totally wrong that people should wait

I am hoping this comment was ironic - There are in fact 3 bank holidays over the Christmas period - many households are now getting their collections on the same days as normal, most have only a 1 or 2 day slippage at most. And everything 'corrects' by the New Year. In previous years we have had up to 3 weeks of disrupted collection days.

The bin men have rights too, including, I would suggest, the right to Christmas day off. They are hardly an emergency (if always a valuable and indeed vital) service.

If you are over-flowing there are many deposit points around the borough, especially for recyclables.

At least a hold-up in Blue Bin collection (mine is also full, and my collections are unchanged) is neither noxious nor a health hazard.

If they didn't come yesterday (sat) you need to fill in the form on southwark website re missed collection & they will come collect within the next couple of days. I've done this before myself a few times in the past. You shouldn't have to wait till the next collection day if they've not been.

They came Fri for the blue and food bin stuff - a huge relief but I find the whole fortnightly collection stressful at the best of times. Our normal bin is full to busting and due for collection on Weds so Fri again and I have two bags in the kitchen waiting to go in it as soon as it is emptied. We are a family of 5 and our neighbours, a family of 3 kindly let us put stuff in their bins from time to time. I am happy for bin men to have holidays. I just think there should be more bin men and collections for everything weekly or the option to pay more council tax for weekly collections or a discount for fortnightly. I hate David Cameron and I love that he said he would re-instate weekly collections and has done sod all about it - tosser.

    • I can't access the article - what's the gist?  I took the markets getting jittery when she was crying at PMQs to be a sign that they trusted her. But maybe it was because they were simply worried about any form of instability.  The NIC hikes have stymied the economy, which we could all see a mile off. Will a wealth tax improve things? Does anyone here think the trickle down has any impact and that chasing out the super rich will help things? Or are we just seeing off the biggest contributors to the economy? And has the Kwasi approach ever worked anywhere else?  Economics is not my strong point at all, I'd love to know others' opinions, but it seems to be she has few options, especially as the party is so divided.
    • does either of them have a surgery? probably not over summer, but I thought they had to give the opportunity for their constituents to meet them.
    • MaryT, I’ve contacted the Dulwich Hill councillors several times in recent years, always copying them both in. I have never had an acknowledgment from Jon Hartley (not even an automated response or out-of-office) nor had any response or engagement from him regarding the issue raised.   On each occasion, only Maggie Browning responded (she uses an out-of-office if she is away). The last time, I received no response from either for 3 months, until Maggie Browning emailed me to apologise for not responding and asking if the problem had been resolved.
    • The  Kwasi effect is being considered.
