"I suppose actually it doesn't matter if it is day or night, I just reminded myself, that twice, both during rush hour in the morning I've been what people would call, sexually attacked. Once on my way to West Dulwich station when I lived there at the time. The second time (which I put a thread about at the time to warn people) was when I moved here, on my way to work again. (Please don't think I was dressed proactively or anything, both times I was going to work in town etc.)."

Sorry to deviate from the thread a bit but muffins78, I just wanted to say that it shouldn't make a difference what you were wearing, provocative or not. Your outfit/appearance is never an invitation for harassment or attack. Even if you'd been walking around stark naked, your right to personal safety and a journey free from sexual harassment remains. Sorry to get all preachy but it absolutely kills me that we still live in a world where a rape victim can be asked in court, "what were you wearing?" as if she has somehow condoned/invited the attack or had it coming. Also, don't men find this a bit insulting? The idea that they are controlled by their urges and that the sight of bare legs (for example) will be enough to tip them over the sexual edge? Anyway - my point is, please don't ever feel like you have to justify yourself to anyone by explaining what you were wearing when these incidents occured. It should not (and does not, to all sensible human beings) matter.

Rant over. I'm very sorry that happened to you. It's probably my worst nightmare. Thoughts and well wishes to little h and her husband as well, of course. Outrageous.

Depends on if you're a chef or carpenter or other person with a legitimate reason for carrying one. I use my machete for gardening, so I'm covered :-)

That's not a knife.... That's a knife. Mick Dundee. :)

Hi Helen,

Did you get a good look at the knife? Was it around a foot long?

I ask because late last year a man attempted to mug me with a very large and intimidating knife which on closer inspection appeared to be a toy sword. He still tried to stab me with it but, being a toy and all, it didn't do much.

PM me his description if you want, I'm curious to know if he's still active as I never heard from the police again after the initial fuss.

I just noticed your posting... it seems that I may have encountered the same guy that evening too! He attempted to mug me outside my flat on Upland Road after following me from the bus stop on Peckham Rye. He demanded that I give him ?10 as he went into his inside pocket as if searching for a knife. I told him to f*** off and fortunately he did!

    • Missing Cat! 11 months old/ Our friend, Coco, has gone missing. Last seen evening of 31st October near top of Henslowe rd where it meets Underhill Rd in SE22. We know she has started wandering up Friern Rd and further we guess but we imagine she has been spooked by Halloween / Fireworks goings on. She is a grey Siberian mix with some brown stripes down her, very friendly and likes to eat. Please let us know
    • That said, organised displays could be on Saturday before and after and the actual day, and private ones could just not have the loud ones.  It’s all down to accessibility and people caring/not caring
    • The problem this year is that 5th November falls on a Wednesday. So some places will be bringing their "bonfire night" forward to Saturday 1st and some will be knocking it back to Saturday 8th and there'll probably be a few that just go with Wednesday 5th anyway. If you're doing a public display, having it on a weekend gets more crowds. Which basically means a solid week of fireworks.
    • Fireworks in this area do feel totally incessant at this time of year, almost every evening there is terrible noise. I feel great concern for wildlife, pets (I have a senior cat who hates them), as well as people who struggle with PTSD etc. Last year I even had people setting them off in front of my home. Tonight and yesterday evening have been particularly bad. Is there anything we can do as a community to prevent this? What action can we take? Surely we shouldn’t be expected to just put up with it every year for weeks on end!
