I definately think its a choice between cannon and nikon. Ive got a 20D which is brilliant. The 350D 400D and 30D are all worth looking at as is the nikon D50 and D80. All depends on you budget. Look around for good deals, I bought my 20D from Jacobs it was secondhand reconditioned from cannon. And its lovely. Buy a few which and what camera mags they are always doing comparisons but my advice get your hands on them in a shop. Its amazing how different they all feel and good advice from shop assistant can be good to talk through the other things involved ie lenses ect. I found the guys in jacobs on new oxfod street seemed to have more time than the ones in jessops. The is also a fantastic nikon shop grays of westminster.

Good luck

Sorry to bring back to life a very old thread, but I am thinking about treating myself.... Has anyone got a Nikon D50? Which had it at number 2 in their best buys a couple of months ago, second only to the canon EOS 350D, and it's a damned sight cheaper than everything else!!!

NOTE: Which don't take the price in to account, so that didn't earn it points......

What do you think?

First question I always ask, when people ask me this, is what camera equipemnt do you have already? If you have canon lenses, then financially I'd stick with the same brand, assuming lenses are compatible (I.E. an EOS mount)

If you don't and it's a clean slate, then I would suggest you try both of them on the shop to see what suits your hands and head better. Being blunt, both cameras will perform to a high level, that to the untrained eye will be indistinguishable, so see which you feel more comfortable with. So, pick them up, play with them, and then make a choice

I believe that Calumet will be easily persuaded to refund a rental if you buy the cameras from them, (assuming you like it first!) One other persuader could be that Canon are offering ?50 cashback on the 400D, which as it has the dust cleaning sensor would make it my choice, if budget could streatch to it. (I nearly traded my 1Ds in for one of these just to eliminatew the dust issue on images, but decided agains as it feels too small for my hands, esp after the 1Ds and 1DMK2 I use.)

Hope this has helped, but fear it's probably raised more questions in your mind!)

Eric

Olympus OM1 my baby, did stop being made in 1978, but she'a doll!

Does anyone know a good camera repairers i have tried the one's i know and they don't repair Hitachi and it looks like no-one does. The black smudge...i mean helicopter will probebly have to stay.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Oh well, have just ordered a Canon EOS 350D.... Hope I've done the right thing... There were just so many facts and figures to look at and consider that I got a headache!!!!!

I like the feel of them, and Which rate it as the best all round, so here's hoping!

    • What is it that makes Waitrose so special! Admittedly I have shopped a couple of times in the Orpington and Beckenham one - sometimes buying food which I cannot get else where. Their 'basic range' is not bad. Price for price and quality - M & S.

    • Hi, Thinking about  going with some friends and was just wondering if folk might like to report back please. Most importantly sound level when busy & is it disabled friendly.  Thinking on a Sunday lunchtime but don’t want a busy busy environment or loud chatter - a couple of friends could not cope. Time can be flexible, if that helps - say 2 ish to avoid above.. Thanks…
