We're thinking of visiting Ireland for the first time in April with 2 year old twins. Can anyone give recommendations for a good base location for day trips? Dublin isn't really an option as cities are too difficult with the twins. Anywhere with gorgeous scenery and interesting historical landmarks would be appreciated. We'll have a rental car.

Thank you!

West cork a great choice

West generally... South Kerry, north Clare

Ballyvaughan is a particular favourite of mine. Small small town in gorgeous location. Just a couple of pubs and restaurants but so handy for many beaches and the burren

Galway a short drive away for a bigger day out

Bias means I should mention my hometown of youghal in co cork as well

Longest beach in many countries

Bustling town

Handy for cork and Waterford cities

Kinsale harbor and gastro centre nearby

East coast Ireland is a bit Home Counties England by comparison

Middle Ireland (athlone etc) is a lot of flat bog land

Draw a line from Waterford through cork and coastal cork, Kerry and Clare up to Galway and Sligo and you'll be in right ball park

(North Kerry and south Clare a slight exception. A bit more hard bitten and less touristy. As a rule. Still some nice spots tho)

    • Good plan, thanks! I do already have a fire guard which is used for its intended purpose! Smoke free heat logs, before anybody asks. I am presently using a large picture covered in an old bedspread, but a fire guard would cover more of the gap. I'll do some research!
