Don't go to the Ritzy Tonight (Fri 11th Apr) - Support the Strike!

Recommended Posts

I've no idea Jeremy. The BECTU website doesn't say.

Perhaps other branches aren't heavily unionised or pay is decided locally rather than centrally through a sort of franchise model?

But I agree a Picturehouse-wide ballot would have been more useful.

While I appreciate the inconvenience for customers, a Friday night is most effective for the impact it has on the business's takings. A strike on a Mon morning would be pointless, no?

That's what I meant- Ritzy/Picturehouses know this film is going to be mass and have been promoting it for some time-timing may well be sheer coincidence for the release but could not have been fortunate for getting noticed. We're Ritzy members and fully support the action.

The staff are great and I applaud their action.

we looked at booking on Tuesday and all was all sold out. I think many may have cancelled tonight and Picturehouses are getting a skeleton staff from other branches to cover, please don't cross the friendly picket line

    • I agree with your sentiment, however you are mistaken about the Dulwich Estate. Their sole purpose is to make as much money as possible to give to the schools they support, as well as the almshouses and other historical buildings. They do not care about social housing (except subsidised housing for teachers of the schools), refreshing the area, low-rent studios, charming but affordable pub, etc. While they are a charity, their purpose is very constrained/focused and whatever they do with this site, it has to make money for them. It's not that they're being nasty or stingy, it's just what their statutes tell them they have to do. Note that I am not defending them, but knowing the above helps understand why they do what they do, even if sometimes it seems to go against the wishes of the local community. They are not answerable to the local community, and their only oversight is the charity commission and the courts. And of course, like all bureaucracies (esp those with limited oversight), they look after themselves very well.
