Where are we all going to live?

I have friends who studied and live there and now work in leading fields of genetic research.

Are these friends the same ones who have left for jobs "with research bodies in Europe because the equivalent bodies in Cambridge can't grow enough within the space they have"?

A couple have yes - for bigger research facilities.

Seems like your colleague isn't prepared to move out of their comfort zone and into a suburb a bit further out. With lower "living standards", do you mean they are needing to moving to Syria? I always thought living standards were relatively generic across London.

What indeed do you mean by "safety"? There are plenty of safe affordable areas in London, or is this person scared of the urban myths of living south of the river.

If they own their current flat, it is likely to have increased in value substantially. Enough equity to buy somewhere bigger for their family. I have just done the same, and there was no shortage of such properties in "non scary" areas.

I really can't stand overdramatising a situation. All it takes is a bit of sacrifice and some thought and patience.
