Gardeners: Name that weed!

Yeah, Japanese Knotweed is more than a rumour in my garden as the previous occupiers claimed they didn't know of any - then the neighbours told me it's rife and they couldn't get a mortgage because of it.

That's why I'm questioning every weed!

I'm pretty certain it's bindweed. Which is a pest but not in the same league as knotweed, you'll see it everywhere in the summer - look out for hedges with lots of foliage and large trumpet white flowers. Just treat the leaves with Roundup (spray or get a stick and paint it on the leaves) and then leave it until it dies back (usually within 1 - 2 weeks).

Don't rip it out unless you're certain you've got the whole root - ripping it splits the roots and it spreads!

That's true, but with five neighbouring gardens which all have bindweed here and there, tracing back to the root isn't really an option!

A bit of intermittent ripping when you're tending to other stuff is all it takes.

    • Friend recommends Penge Cycle Club.  Southwark Cyclists usually do two social cycle rides on Saturday, you don't need to be a member (London Cycling Campaign) but recommended.  They are advertised on the What's On section of EDF. And you can go on their other Borough group rides, Lewisham Cyclists often do long rides. Generally very cycle friendly around here, despite occasional on line hostility.

If we don't want Lordship Lane full of chains, then good quality independent family places need custom.
