I volunteer through work as a reading partner in a primary school in Tower Hamlets. I am really proud of the progress my partner has made during the acedemic year and would like to buy him a present that would build on what he's achieved so far.

It's our last session on 10 July and was thinking of getting a literacy game of some kind but am at a loss as to where to start. He's in year 1 and is six years old. I don't think his family speak English as a first language at home, so maybe something he can play by himself? Or possibly something the whole family could play? He doesn't have any older siblings.

Thanks

I love the look of this co-operative board game, am planning on getting it for my son this year but it's 5+ so should be fab for a six year old. Not specifically literacy but a lovely concept and no 'winning' if you see what I mean!

    • A couple of updates to this terrible event:   1) In 2021, two cousins (one from Penge and one from Streatham) were convicted of murder and sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison. The Southwark News has a summary of the awful day. https://southwarknews.co.uk/area/dulwich/donnell-rhule-dulwich-knife-murderer-cousins-sentenced-to-life-for-killing-18-year-old/    2) Last week, a female prison officer from Forest Hill was sentenced to eight months in prison for pursuing a relationship with one of the two murderers while at HMP Brixton. https://metro.co.uk/2025/12/15/probation-officer-admits-relationship-prisoner-hmp-belmarsh-25501445/ https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/38203627/probation-officer-jailed-illicit-relationship-murderer-secure-prison/
    • The Commons Public Accounts Committee questioned both the CEO and MD of Capita yesterday, at their last meeting before the recess:  https://committees.parliament.uk/event/25889/formal-meeting-oral-evidence-session/.  In October they'd already expressed concern that Capita might not  be able to efficiently retake over responsibility for the administration within the timescale. Given the joint statement recently issued by Capita and the Cabinet Office I'm not sure that contacting an MP is going to add much, other than venting what I think most of us can probably appreciate of what those affected are likely  to be thinking and feeling; unless perhaps, and I hope it's not needed, to report on deficiencies in the immediate rescue actions.

    • Two for Ratcliffe, the obvious one:   And one simply because it has the word  "You are nothing but blind fascists" in it.  Oh and a good song too.   Haven't listened to this for years.  Bloody good!
