These bins at Sainsburys on Dog Kennel hill are all taped up - and have been for sometime. Any idea what the problem is?

Did you see this article in the Telegraph on Saturday?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/3852372/Councils-dumping-more-than-200000-tonnes-of-recycling-every-year.html

It says councils are dumped more than 200,000 tonnes of recycling stuff in landfill this year.

Apparently the recession is at least partly to blame.

Depressing really.

Assuming that the bins at Sainsburys are still out-of-action (as you posted above) then you could try PM'ing Recycling Jenny (who also posted above) as suggested by PeckhamRose though she works for Tetra Pak and ACE UK, not Southwark Council. Failing that you could email [email protected] or phone them on 0870 442 6000. Lastly, there's a Tetra Pak recycling bin in the Forest Hill Sainsburys car-park so you could try that one.

Zephyr,

I've looked into your comment about the bins being taped up.

At this supermarket, there is a cupboard system with a slot on the front for you to put your cartons into. Behind the slot (inside the cupboard) there are two bins to collect the cartons that fall through. When one fills up, they are meant to be swapped over so that the second one can fill up.

The opening for cartons has been taped up because the supermarket were not swapping the bins around inside the main cupboard. So as consumers were putting their cartons in there were problems with overflow and mess. So instead, we have provided 3 black carton recycling bins elsewhere around the recycling area, away from the cupboard. Have a look in the recycling area for them, they are black with orange signs and should also have a picture of some cartons on them.

I hope that helps, if you have any more problems, you can contact us on [email protected].

I had thought I was writing of my own experiences in Underhill Road but obviously I don't know my own streets. When the men I watch tip rubbish into their lorries they do not seem to spill out into the road, but obviously my eyes aren't good enough to see this.
    • It was around New Year 2023; I had walked my dog past the exact spot late that evening before it happened. There were a lot of cars in Straker's Road that night playing loud music. "Roadmen" Alice. We all know who they are but you are daring, through the use of public shaming and ostracism, people to declare something you already know. Tut tut Alice, white boys also affect a Roadman persona. There was a statistic I read on a council advert at a bus stop in Lambeth, it said "99% of young people in Lambeth have never been in trouble with the police". We all know 99% of the 1% are Roadmen so lets not pretend any further.
