Both scan fine, I think.

Thunderbolt has a more onomatopoeic sound to it, especially with the pounding toms.

However, should Fred have gone with clap, this could easily have been addressed with a nod from another complimentary percussive element.

My grandmother used to open the door during thunderstorms so if a lightening ball came down the chimney, it could go out of the door wihout causing damage. I wouldn't go as far as saying that anyone believed her, but we sort of hoped it might happen. And did it? No.
