ED Water smelling "Chemically"

Not sure if anyone has noticed this, but over the last week or so my tap water has quite a distinct chemical smell about it - Its almost a bleach/chlorine odour.

I also noticed the same odour in the water coming from the showers at my local gym. (down the other end of Lordship Lane)

Am I imagining things?! - I've been a resident in ED for about 9 years and its the first time I've detected it.

I've moved from Plough end to Goose Green end in the last few weeks so have had experience of both - and I've not noticed anything unusual. Not to say you are wrong however - the problem might be more localised. Or I might have no taste-buds

I noticed this in the summer and again recently. I believe it is due to cholorine being added at the treatment plant. They do this several times a year. See the first FAQ on this page:

Yes, I think all tap water is chlorinated, but you won't always taste it. If the taste bothers you, you can leave it to stand and the chloring dissipates (or something). Of course you can always choose to filter it, but that's more expensive.

Its not the taste I'm worried about - I normally filter Tap water anyway.

Its the smell - I can smell it when washing my face or even using the shower.

Yep, I'm off Barry Rd, and ours smells really "bleachy" too (and I had better not be pregnant as I already have a 2 year old and a 3 month old!).

If ever you visit New York you will find the tap water is so heavily chlorinated, it smells like the public swimming pool when you run the tap, or take a shower.

I have noticed that my tea tastes and smells different. I live behind Goose Green.

Yup. I miked some green beans yesterday and the smell was very offputting. The beans, however, tasted good. I use a Brita filter kettle and normal filter jug. As for NYC water, I agree. It is disgusting to smell and taste.

Interesting discussion, I am near Peckham Rye and for the past year I have been noticing how dirty and full of limescale the water is, Mainly because the shower basin and the grout seem to scale up and discolour quicker then normal (I have had to renew the grout twice in the past 12 months, and only once before in the past 10 years....)

I wonder if this is related (and before anyone suggests it, I do clean the shower on a regular basis so it is not down to not cleaning)

When I first moved to area I tested the water for hardness with a dipstick thingy. It was off the scale! It is probably worth installing a water softener if you can afford it.......
