Due to this topic being excessively long, a new 2024 "New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham" has been opened here. Please continue the discussion there.

Redemption roasters looked nice inside today and was doing good trade but my take away was they weren?t quite ready to be open and had a lot of teething issues so might sort themselves out in a couple of weeks.

The cheese shop next to au ciel is really coming on in terms of fit out so hopefully open soon.

Also looking forward to Megan?s opening and heard something about a wine bar next door to it too. So much opening in Dulwich Village!

I'm not enthusiastic about chain bars (esp ones with "bottomless brunch" 🤮) but...it's a fair distance from Lordship Lane. I'd see it as competition more for the nine other coffee shops in the Village and esp the Crown and Greyhound, which continues to have rubbish service.

Chains haven't always had a good time in Dulwich - Cafe Rouge just died in West Dulwich, and the site of the Real Greek has had a stream of franchise failures. Even the Real Greek seemed a bit quiet for the first couple of years (not helped by prices) - but with good outdoor space, a lick of paint, and really charming staff, they seem to be doing well now.

Had an incredible dinner at newish restaurant Omni (near the bottom of Rye Lane). All vegan (which I am not) - incredible flavours, some quite unusual - the corn ribs with cashew cream for example were amazing. Has good sandwiches at lunchtime too.

Their sandwiches are great. Didn't realise they did dinner - will check it out.

This is West Dulwich, but I don't care, I'm a born anarchist: old Cafe Rouge site on Park Hall Rd is being renovated as Walter's, described as a "Neighbourhood restaurant from the team behind The Oystermen", which in turn looks like a Covent Garden seafood bar. That's encouraging that it's not just another coffee shop, so fingers crossed.

Which end of Rye Lane is the bottom end? The end nearest to East Dulwich with Mr Bao (?) etc?

Were they?

Did they breathe the smoke of 10 thousand coal fires?

Did they smoke?

Did they have access to clean water?

Did they have access to healthcare ?

Did they have anti-biotics, vaccines and other modern 'miracles'

Did they have sedentary lives?

I agree with many of the things TaraFitness is saying. Just bear in mind that there are many positives and negatives about modern life. The quality and quantity and variety of the food we eat is almost entirely under our control and much of that will have a bearing on our health.

Huh ?😳

Good to get a seafood restaurant opening up rather than another pizza or coffee place.

"Small" St Christopher's has now reopened as a dedicated kids shop. Looks good.

Meanwhile, booze licence application has gone in for the old bookie opposite M&S on Lordship Lane for...Megan's Deli, another casual dining place (and sister to the one in Dulwich Village). Thank God for that - if there's one thing that East Dulwich is calling out for it's another twee coffee shop.

On the upside the new SDM hardware shop seems quite clean, organised and well-stocked.

It now has benches outside and a modest selection of pastries.

I?ve been looking all over ED for somewhere that sells coffee. Glad they?ve spotted the gap in the market. Now if someone could just think to start selling pizzas, they?d really be on to something

I recognise the satire, of course, but it is interesting that Covid-19 and changed working habits may have altered the commercial landscape - more people, including now those working from home, are looking to get out for a cup of coffee and a bite - and into places that are not too crowded or airless - so a commercially sustainable increase in coffee shops is maybe not that surprising. How long the opportunity continues will be interesting.

I hear you... but I would take that over the Bookie's everyday of the week

    • Surprise, surprise. It didn't take them long, did it. This will be something of a test as to how much the council really care about parks and the environment. A footfall of 60,000. Are they mad? There is no way this park is designed for or can sustain that sort of use. Just had a look at the schedule. If allowed to go ahead, this will involve a large slice of the park (not the common) sectioned off and out of use for three weeks of May and the first week of June. Here's an idea, why not trial the festival in one of the other Southwark Parks, so the 'goodness' can be shared around the borough?
    • There was another unprovoked attack on Monday this week on a young woman nearby (Anstey Road) at 6.45pm. Don't have any other details, it was posted on a Facebook group by her flatmate. Pretty worrying  https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1EGfDrCAST/
    • OMFG is it possible for the council to do anything without a bunch of armchair experts moaning about it? The library refurb is great news, as it's lovely but completely shagged out - the toilets don't even work reliably. Other libraries in the area will be open longer house during the closure. July is a rubbish time to begin a refurb because it's just before the entire construction sector goes on summer holiday, and it would mean delaying the work another 8 months.
    • Licensing application for 2026 has gone in and they want to extend the event from 4 to 7 days accross two weekends.  There are some proposed significant changes to be aware of:   Event proposal moves to two separate weekends Number of days of the festival moves from 4 to 7 meaning also a change in the original licence is required Expected footfall in the park over the two weekends around 60,000.    Dear Peckham Rye Park Stakeholder,   Re: STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION – event application: ‘GALA and On The Rye Festival 2026’ – ref: SWKEVE000935   We are writing to you because you have previously identified yourself as someone who wishes to be informed about event applications for Peckham Rye Park, or we think that you might have an interest in knowing about this particular event application.   Please be aware that the council are in receipt of an event application for: GALA and On The Rye Festival 2026’   In line with the council’s Outdoor Events Policy and events application process we are carrying out consultation regarding this application.   The following reference documents are attached to this email:   Consultation information APPENDIX A – site plan weekend 1 APPENDIX B – site plan weekend 2 APPENDIX C – Production Schedule APPENDIX D – 2025 Noise Management Plan   The consultation is open from Tuesday 4 November and will close at midnight on Tuesday 2 December 2025   Community engagement sessions will take place on Wednesday 19 November.   If you would like to comment on application: SWKEVE000935 and take part in the online consultation, please visit:   www.southwark.gov.uk/GALA2026   If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.     Kind Regards, Southwark Events Team Environment and Leisure PO Box 64529 London SE1P 5LX 020 7525 3639 @SouthwarkEvents APPENDIX A - SITE PLAN weekend 1.pdf APPENDIX B - SITE PLAN weekend 2.pdf APPENDIX C - PRODUCTION SCHEDULE.pdf And just to add that councillor Renata Hamvas chairs the licensing committee.
