New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham

Redemption roasters looked nice inside today and was doing good trade but my take away was they weren?t quite ready to be open and had a lot of teething issues so might sort themselves out in a couple of weeks.

The cheese shop next to au ciel is really coming on in terms of fit out so hopefully open soon.

Also looking forward to Megan?s opening and heard something about a wine bar next door to it too. So much opening in Dulwich Village!

That's going to give the three independents on the Lane and in Grove Vale a bit of competition to compete against, especially as it's a chain and that can probably run at lower margins, lets see what happens.

I'm not enthusiastic about chain bars (esp ones with "bottomless brunch" 🤮) but...it's a fair distance from Lordship Lane. I'd see it as competition more for the nine other coffee shops in the Village and esp the Crown and Greyhound, which continues to have rubbish service.

Chains haven't always had a good time in Dulwich - Cafe Rouge just died in West Dulwich, and the site of the Real Greek has had a stream of franchise failures. Even the Real Greek seemed a bit quiet for the first couple of years (not helped by prices) - but with good outdoor space, a lick of paint, and really charming staff, they seem to be doing well now.

Heritage Cheese on Calton Ave at "Dulwich Square" is having its opening day next Wednesday 15 September. It looks nice inside so far.

Bon Coffee has opened up on Lordship Lane to replace "Truly Scrumptious". Seems like the usual coffee and croissants fare. No seating so far - maybe after the C-word recedes..?

Had an incredible dinner at newish restaurant Omni (near the bottom of Rye Lane). All vegan (which I am not) - incredible flavours, some quite unusual - the corn ribs with cashew cream for example were amazing. Has good sandwiches at lunchtime too.

This is West Dulwich, but I don't care, I'm a born anarchist: old Cafe Rouge site on Park Hall Rd is being renovated as Walter's, described as a "Neighbourhood restaurant from the team behind The Oystermen", which in turn looks like a Covent Garden seafood bar. That's encouraging that it's not just another coffee shop, so fingers crossed.

Which end of Rye Lane is the bottom end? The end nearest to East Dulwich with Mr Bao (?) etc?

Did they have access to clean water?

Did they have access to healthcare ?

Did they have anti-biotics, vaccines and other modern 'miracles'

Did they have sedentary lives?

I agree with many of the things TaraFitness is saying. Just bear in mind that there are many positives and negatives about modern life. The quality and quantity and variety of the food we eat is almost entirely under our control and much of that will have a bearing on our health.

Children's Cafe (that is its name) on corner of Peckham Rye and E Dulwich Road, where the Kumon place was. Looks nice but not sure whether it is for under-age cappuccino fiends or their parents to accompany them!

The small St Christopher's is closing down. I don't know if this for economic reasons post-lockdown. It always seemed a bit odd to have two shops so near to one another.

Meanwhile, booze licence application has gone in for the old bookie opposite M&S on Lordship Lane for...Megan's Deli, another casual dining place (and sister to the one in Dulwich Village). Thank God for that - if there's one thing that East Dulwich is calling out for it's another twee coffee shop.

On the upside the new SDM hardware shop seems quite clean, organised and well-stocked.

It now has benches outside and a modest selection of pastries.

I?ve been looking all over ED for somewhere that sells coffee. Glad they?ve spotted the gap in the market. Now if someone could just think to start selling pizzas, they?d really be on to something

I recognise the satire, of course, but it is interesting that Covid-19 and changed working habits may have altered the commercial landscape - more people, including now those working from home, are looking to get out for a cup of coffee and a bite - and into places that are not too crowded or airless - so a commercially sustainable increase in coffee shops is maybe not that surprising. How long the opportunity continues will be interesting.

Anyone know what's happening with the old House of Tippler site? It's been under development for sometime.
