Side return extension recommendation required

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm new to the forum so please go easy on me. There seems to be a tremendous wealth of personal experiences with building companies on the site, however I am not able to find too many recommendations for specifically companies specialising in side and rear exstension work. I have been able to find the following:

1. Build team (mixed reviews)

2. Plus rooms (generally positive)

3. Privilege (good reviews).

Has anyone else recently completed a side return exstension and have some recommendations for builders that we could approach? Furthermore any recommendations tips would also be greatly received. I.e. have people found it better to go with a separate architect/ architectural design co or go in house? I can see benefits to both myself and how far out of the back rear elevation will Southwark council typically allow rear extensions to go?

Any help/advice on the above would be greatly received.

I would certainly recommend going to an architect depending on what you would like to achieve. We had a great extension done about 6+ yrs. We leave just off Nunhead green. NB I am related to the architect I am recommending. http://cbarchitects.co.uk

Hi

I would be happy to pop over and discuss your project with you, I live in East Dulwich and we have a lot of experience doing side returns in and around Southwark. Please take a look at our website and feel free to give us a ring for a chat.

All the best

on our recent experience I would recommend getting a set of drawings made with a specification (Materials, type of lintels etc).

And watch out for drain runs - having your soil pipe inside a wall can sometimes be interesting :-)

Then asking if same person ( or another ) will oversee the works - or running the tender process yourself with the bod who did the drawing advising?

We used Tim Woolcott for drawing and advice for our current secure store / garage rebuild project in this way

We've just had our rear / side return extension completed by Martin's Builders(02086705771). We found them via another recommendation on the forum. I've been meaning to post a more detailed review, but in short, they've done a fantastic job - all completed within budget and with the minimum of fuss. Martin's put us in touch with Clinton McHenry (0203 719 4909) for the structural drawings, and we drafted the plans ourselves (with a little help from the Southwark planning portal, some tracing paper and a tape measure).

    • In answer to your question Pugwash, the variety of foods that they offer both in canned goods and fresh. i personally no longer am a Sainsbury customer after years - feel that the quality of both their fruit, veg and fresh products ie meat, chicken, fish is not of a quality that they use to be. Agree with Sue that Co- Op does not make for a pleasant shopping experience.  On the subject of Waitrose not coming to ED - one can only assume that market research has been done by the company which makes it a non starter which, when you think about it is strange as all the big contenders are here.. Perhaps the powers to be have never heard of ED!! Maybe a Lidl or Aldi will rear their heads but somehow can’t see it as space is way to small. Really is strange that Waitrose is a non arrival - never ceases to amaze me how many eateries are in Lordship Lane alone and the majority all survive.
    • What is it that makes Waitrose so special! Admittedly I have shopped a couple of times in the Orpington and Beckenham one - sometimes buying food which I cannot get else where. Their 'basic range' is not bad. Price for price and quality - M & S.
