Hi there,

We are moving into a rented property and the stairs are painted wood with horizontal bannisters that have big gaps between them.

I wondered if anyone had come across innovative solutions to prevent small children slipping on the stairs (I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 5 month old) and also slipping crawling through the bannisters, which are also on the first floor.

We are looking for something that will not damage the wooden stairs to minimise repairs when we leave.

I've posted a pic of similar bannisters although with these ones the gaps are much bigger and the spindles much smaller.

Any help would be appreciated and if anyone knows a builder/ fitter who might be able to help out that would be great.

Thank you!

A friend has stairs like these and has fitted sheets of perspex to the horizontal bannisters. It has the advantage of not blocking light or affecting the look of the stairs and then you could fill in the screw holes when you leave and touch up the paint.

    • Is Dell Autos closing down completely or just moving? For whatever it's worth, for MOTs I've had good recent experience with The Test Centre in Deptford. They only do MOTs so they don't have any particular incentive to fail you and they usually have same day appointments. Open 7 days a week and late. https://www.thetestcentre.co.uk/our-test-centres/deptford-branch/ Obviously you would still need a "normal" garage to do servicing and repairs etc.
    • So what is the issue? You want compensation for the loss of value, or you want to expedite the matter?
    • No. What happened? I actually thought, considering it was what we used to call Guy Fawkes Day last night, the loud noises from  fireworks ended remarkably early. About 9pm? Maybe I just fell asleep and didn't hear any later ones. Do people actually burn Guys any more? Apart from at places like Lewes, where I believe they still have Bonfire Societies and burn effigies of various political figures etc.
    • The accompaniment to our "Christmas Pudding" aka Nothing-Whatever-Like-A- Christmas-Pudding last year  at The Cherry Tree was "brandy butter ice-cream." If it had ever been near any brandy, the brandy must have been waved in its direction from a very great distance. Same with butter. The ice cream tasted like bog standard "vanilla" from a catering tub. At least it did bear some resemblance to ice cream. Whereas the "Christmas Pudding" bore no resemblance whatever to any Christmas Pudding I have ever seen or tasted in my many  decades of seeing and tasting Christmas Puddings. Oh, and Cinzano Bianco. Bleurgh. My sister used to drink that. 🤢
