The only London event for French Canadian author Denis Th?riault takes place on Monday 1st December at 7.30pm. Straight after his appearance on the Radio 2 Simon Mayo show Denis will chat about his amazing novel 'The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman.'

A truly original novel centering on obsession, loneliness and the unlikely but beautiful art of haiku writing. Bilodo lives a solitary daily life, routinely completing his post round every day and returning to his empty Montreal apartment. But he has taken to stealing people?s post, steaming open the envelopes and reading the letters inside. S?gol?ne corresponds with the master poet Gaston, and their letters are composed of only haiku. The simplicity and elegance of their poems move Bilodo and he begins to fall in love with her. One day Gaston dies after being hit by a car and faced with the prospect of continuing a life without his beloved?s poetry, Bilodo decides to impersonate Gaston and continue to write to S?gol?ne himself. But how long can such a deception endure?

"Enchanting, philosophically astute and deeply poignant" - John Burnside

"'The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman' is a strange yet wonderful tale of obsession reminiscent of Haruki Murakami and Jean Giono that sucks you into the melancholy and monotonous world of a postman with a questionable hobby." ? Dave Faulds (Bookseller at Dulwich Books)

    • https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/funeral-for-tony-slattery I never knew what happened to Ton Slattery after the brilliant improvisation comedy show Whose line is it anyway? For those old enough you'll remember it was a mix of American and British comedians hosted by Clive (forgotten surname)... just read he sadly developed mental health issues that impacted his ability to work but that he'd had much better last few years and been doing comedy tours again in the UK. His partner is fundraising for the funeral but as he remains special to many who grew up watching that show he's got far more than the original target amount. His partner and he had been together 40 years. Amazing and heartwarming love...

    • Yes, it would be great to see them nationalised. Along with the other water companies they seem to have a great business model: -submit a 5 year plan to the regulator asking for yearly price increases to cover the cost of improving the infrastructure and get them to approve it - carry on paying handsome dividends to shareholders and eye watering salaries to senior executives  - fail to achieve the infrastructure targets at the end of the five years, make some excuses and draw up the next plan Magic!
