I don't know the answer, but I think you are right to be discerning. I was talking to a dentist at a social event recently, and based on our conversation I would always check which athletics they did at school. Apparently it is common to have separate 'medics' athletics teams at UK universities, and there are certain practices - 'drinking games' - which take place as an introduction test as you would expect, but also regularly thereafter which I found unusual. Some of these were not very hygienic, and sounded as though they would be a distraction to study if being carried out too often.
