My Canon MP970 printer has gone berserk.

It now "prints" blank sheets of paper, after a series of error messages, one of which is apparently the cause of two class actions against Canon in the States :(

http://community.usa.canon.com/t5/Personal-Printers/Call-to-Arms-for-the-dreaded-U052-Wrong-Printhead-Error/td-p/65759/page/3

There's 74 pages of that thread, starting only from September 2014 and most from November 2014:(

The printer was quite expensive but also it's quite old (six years old) so not sure whether it's worth shelling out to get it repaired, assuming that it could be.

I have been using compatible cartridges, but I have been since I had the printer, so I doubt that could be the problem.

Does anybody know of a local-ish person who could help? Thanks.

ETA: I'm a bit desperate, as I use the printer a lot :(

Personally, Sue I'd get a new one. You can pick up a descent multi-function printer for about 70 quid, which is probably less than getting it fixed would cost.

My old HP printer is in the process of dying after about 7 years and I picked up a Canon in the new year sales. I'd point you in the same direction but, sadly, Tesco has put the price back up. It's still sitting in the box waiting for my current cartridges to finish.

I'd pretty much agree with Loz here Sue. 6 years isn't a bad return on any printer made in last 10 years

You will get a better printer for much cheaper than it takes to repair. Of course the downside is you will need a bank loan for new cartridges

Hi Sue,

You could try removing the print head and flushing it out with cold running water for ten minutes or so until the run-through is clean, allow it to dry thoroughly!! replace and pray !! No doubt you have tried the recommendations on the canon site? Other than that Buy a new printer , prices have dropped dramitically in the past few years, but choose carefully as it's the ink where they make their money!!

Good luck R/C

Thanks all, good advice.

Right-clicking, I haven't had time to do anything except the very obvious, but I will have a look over the weekend. However people didn't seem to think that the Canon advice was very effective :( But deffo worth trying.

What is very annoying is that I bought a whole load of cartridges in bulk (not Canon ones obviously) and they almost certainly won't fit any new printer I buy.

Also very annoying that many of the sales have finished!! C'est la vie!!

This!

This is something for the rage thread. Yes we can be frugal and buy cartridges only when needed but that can be a false economy. If we try and be clever and buy cheaply in bulk we are stranded when printer itself goes

Imagine rebuying all cds everytime a cd player died

I checked that out once. It was cheaper at the time just to get new compatible ones. I always google to find the cheapest (depending on reviews also, obviously).

And yes, life's too short to refill (plus in my case the 99% certainty that ink would go everywhere but the cartridge).

You could try uninstalling and then reinstalling... and checking if there is any "job" waiting to be completed... maybe a driver update issue (usually starts playing up even if nothing has actually changed!)?

Home printers are rubbish for long life and certainly if you've had it for a while it may just be time to get a new one :)

As my problem is to do with printing, I am genuinely interested to know what your "similar" non-printing problem was!!!

    • If you have recently sold your flat in East Dulwich what was the difference between valuation and eventual selling price? I’m finding that agent valuations vary so widely that it’s hard to get any idea of current actual property values.  Are any agents particularly known for overvaluing and by what sort of percentage?
    • It’s 3 AM - Anyone know when this horrendous noise is going to stop?! We’re on the Sainsbury’s Local end of Landells and am quite frankly sympathising with all of you nearer Peckham Rye. My ears are ringing! How is this ok?!  Edit: According to the website it should have finished by 22:30. What is going on and how is this acceptable (and not more people are complaining about the crippling sound levels we’re being subjected to?) - shocking..
    • https://chng.it/YXCH5XXVMY We live near and it’s absolute hell. The noise of the people coming and going from Peckham is the worse. They are so loud and obnoxious. This is my 5th year of this nonsense. People vomiting in my front garden, urinating in my neighbour’s gardens, throwing food into my garden. Screaming waking up my children while waiting for their Ubers. The people that organise this festival are 100% obnoxious. They told us there would be security along our road (there wasn’t). I asked them to put up my family in a hotel but they wouldn’t. It’s actually a human rights infraction for all of us this badly affected. Over the years I have spent so much money trying to be away this weekend but none of us should have to. The data also shows that most people coming are not local residents - so of 3000 tickets sold, hardly any to residents; it’s easy to argue that it disadvantages us residents way more than any conceivable benefit. My elderly neighbours are besides themselves. Every year the setup and striking of the festival blocks off the park during half term, plus the antisocial behaviour and loud noises mean actual children that live here are prevented from using the park and playgrounds. The police initially rejected the license last year… then suddenly changed their mind with no apparent reason… seems legit. Also the GALA team lie and make false statements in their advertising about consulting with us (they don’t they just tell us what is going to happen then are extremely obstinate and rude). My neighbour runs Friends of Peckham Rye and has been totally distressed by all the damage done to recent planting initiatives funded by the local community. GALA do not repair this, GALA pay off Southwark and then Southwark refuse to confirm what they are paid, or how much (if anything) is spent to repair the park.   This needs to be stopped once and for all!!   Petition asking Southwark to stop providing the license to GALA once and for all.    I mean I am sure they will listen to us just like they did about the LTNs…   https://chng.it/YXCH5XXVMY
