We're planning to have some work done on our house disruptive enough to necessitate us moving out for about 3mths.

Current plan is that it won't start till late Aug, so too early to start looking for alternate accomodation, but lots of time to worry about it/use it as an alternative to studying/course reading!!

So, those who have done similar - how did you find where you moved to when the work was going on & how far in advance did you start to look?

Or, anyone need a house sitter for a few months come Aug/Sept?!

We were really lucky and managed to find a 3 month let on here when we did our extension last year - it was someone looking for a 6 month tenant but they didn't manage to let it so agreed to us taking it for 3. Foxtons did have some short term lets last year, they do charge a premium though. Sorry no other advice but it is possible, just a bit stressful!

I suspect that 6 months lets may be advisable buggie - you say alreadt "about" 3 months but judging by anyone I know who has undergone work like this, chances of significant overrun are high

if they finish in 4 months and you have 2 months left on contract, you could always askfor flexibility up front, but worse case scenario the extra cost is better than being homeless again, and relatively small in scale of the work?

Hi,

We had major works done on our home in 2011/2012. It took less than 3 weeks to find a house which was in Upper Norwood. However, I would suggest looking now, and like a member suggested agree on a flexible contract as not to tie yourself in should the works be completed earlier. Take good steps in ensuring both properties and contents are fully covered by insurance. Also keep a check on your builders and that they are working to plan. Get a surveyor if you can to check that your repairs fit building standards etc.

Good luck

    • Hi Busterb, Yesterday I turned up with a scanner & towels, hoping to take a deceased tabby down to TNV. The body was moved moments before arrival & had not been turned in to any vets, rescues or animal hospitals. I am wondering if this could have been the same cat & if someone just tried to move the tabby further away from the road. Please be warned, viewers discretion is advised. but this is what the deceased tabby looked like: https://www.facebook.com/groups/900015513463302/permalink/3729980853800073/  In any case, if you haven't been able to get someone to scan or take down to a vet, I can scan tomorrow morning.
    • Wholeheartedly recommend Aria. He was polite, responsive and sorted our leak, from an old tap on an old plumbing system, with no bother and on same day.
