That's me f*cked then!

A coleague of mine once commented when we were on a firms do a few years ago "You drink like a fish and smoke like a trooper" my response to his amazing perseption of me was "Yes and I go with women as well".

I wish I had the drive to run round Dulwich park every morning but I just cant do it.

Who is this "they" you speak of Mike?

And there is no "now" about this - spurious stories about drinking have been published on a weekly basis for yeeeears now

This guy

regularly demolishes these stories given their spurious origins. Well worth a read.

But the smoking ban has made lives endlessly more pleasant for people who didn't used to have a choice - let's not bracket them together needlessly

Oops - meant to quote that bit too. I have tried a couple of times to do this but like you... ain't going to happen. I enjoy the first bit but when I have to stop to pick up my lung from the ground I find it really hard to get restarted. meanwhile other people are lapping me. then I go home feeling shamed. It's not pretty

I hear you - but it's less scary when you realise, unlike the long, evidence-based, accumulation over years thing on smoking, these drinks stories are just what the papers are selectively publishing to splash on a front page

Next week the papers will be back to 2 glasses of wine a day helps pregnant women...

I do know that smoking isn't the greatest thing to do and really should be banned, but the gov't bean counters like the revenue it generates so that won't happen. I've heard things like Potatoes and Bread can cause cancer, living in London causes cancer and all those fumes from buses cant be good.

"hearing things" isn't really good enough tho, is it? More headline splashes and selected medical papers based on flimsy research.

Smoking shouldn't be banned anyway - if people want to without bothering others why shouldn't they. And again with the bean counters thing - I'm sure the costs to the NHS wipe out plenty of that "profit"

And why choose fumes from buses and not all the cars with one person in them?

sorry mike - i wasn't trying to suggest it was hearing from a mate. I would say ALL of the main news sources (broadsheet and tabloids papers, mainstream TV news, including C4 news) are all guilty of splashing these stories

All I can recommend is reading the badscience website - or better, buying his book - it's fantastic

And yours were popular Brendan.

In my lifetime I've been told that eggs are good for you, then eggs are bad for you and now eggs are good for you again. For eggs read wine, guiness, coffee, tea, this, that and finally the other.

As long as I look and feel good I am going to ignore all these reports - in fact I would say the only really bad thing for you are miserable po-faced gits on tv telling you how to lead your life - looking like they've never had any fun in their entire lives themselves. Well a pox on them all I say.

Sean, I love you even more - you are second in my affections only to the very fabulous, funny, angry and not-unhandsome Ben Goldacre.

Everyone should be prescribed a weekly dose of Goldacre and stop fretting about broccoli giving them cancer or the perfect equation for a sexy Marilyn Monroe wiggle when they walk (merci a Veet I think). We're all going to die of something at some point. I fully intend to do so having eaten and drunk much deliciousnes en route.

    • Politicians, eh. They must wonder why they bother trying to help other people by standing for election. Well, the ones who don't go into politics to make money from backhanders and dodgy connections and speeches about Peppa Pig. But then mostly those ones don't get found out.
    • Two wrongs don't make a right @malumbu and if you come in on a ticket to end the sleaze you'd better be whiter than white.  I suspect a local Dulwich estate agent is preparing to be thrown under the bus.....given the "new evidence has come to light and being assessed by the PM and the independent adviser" news from the PM's spokesperson! Shall we have a wager on which estate agent she went to? 😉 Anyone also want a wager on whether this story was leaked by someone in Southwark council?
