Multinational tax / estate planning

Recommended Posts

Various legacies have given us assets in the US and in Europe -- and of course in the UK. How can we find solicitors able to advise us on tax avoidance as we make our wills?

I know: Jammy b*stards. (Yes. Not our doing, though, we just chose our aunts and uncles well.) Tax-dodgers. (No. Avoiders.)

All that out of the way, has any Forum reader had good help in a similar situation? If so, what was the help? Or -- how did you go about finding that help?

Hi Alex, I am definitely no expert but I have recently rewritten my will so can share a little of what I learned from the solicitor re: foreign assets -

A UK will would cover all foreign assets, worldwide, and automatically include them in your estate, ie treat them in the same way as other assets for IHT purposes - the only exception is in the case of immovable assets ie land or property, in which case you need to have a will in any country where those assets are held, and to then reference that / those wills in your UK will.

I'm sure others will have more pertinent advice but basically I think you could do worse than speak to any decent solicitor, as they should all be able to advise on at least the basics here.

    • Gosh, calm down.. How about not getting so heated, and not eat for 24 hours with sips of water? Try it and you may, just may understand, starvation, no water. No meds at all even if you need them - hasten to add, don’t do it at all if you are medically dependent. In fact, why doesn’t ED - do this for half a day - say in Oct, when everyone has come back from enjoying their, hols, new term starting and as a community, we could all be 1.? Before, November, fireworks, etc.
    • Many thanks I have sent them a message
    • Stop foreign aid spend and re-direct those funds to improve the lives of UK citizens.  People shouldn't have to rely on charities and food banks, their is enough food wasted in this country already which could be re-directed.  Let their own Govts feed them, why does the UK have to do it, how about other nations contributing.  Well if aid can't reach them, how are they supposed to be fed if as you say food parcels being dropped from planes doesn't work.  Lets sort out this country first and put UK citizens first for a change.
    • Well that really is not Christian Spirit at all - we all live in this world and yes, totally agree that it would be wonderful to have no conflict in the world but that is not possible. Yes we have people in need of food  in this country but overall enough charities and organisation in the west to help. We are talking about thousands of people who are starving - not just going hungry - a huge difference would you not agree ? Aid can’t reach people - for whatever conflict and don’t think people dropping parcels, boxes etc from planes would be the answer either.
