hackette
There's an excellent piece in the current Private Eye (no 1230) about an abandoned house in East Dulwich. Apparently it's at 549 Lordship Lane and is commonly known as The Concrete House; it was designed by Charles Barry jnr in 1873 and is one of London's earliest surviving concrete structures. I've looked up and down Lordship Lane and can't seem to see it anywhere - does anyone know where it is?The article is on p14 (Nooks and corners) if you want to have a read. candj
Hackette, If you do a search (top right corner) you'll find a lengthy thread on the concrete house. The house is located on the Forest Hill end of Lordship Lane (it might even be called London Road) past Dulwich Common.Best,-C Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5497-where-is-it-the-concrete-house/#findComment-176314 Share on other sites

Gen17
Wow, it is so nice to see all my suspicions confirmed. So far the other articles written about the house haven't gone full circle, but this one does. Thanks for scanning the article Huguenot! :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5497-where-is-it-the-concrete-house/#findComment-176336 Share on other sites

PeterW
I'm becoming a bit of a bore on this subject after writing about it, but as far as I'm aware it wasn't designed by Charles Barry. Not that this matters ? it is believed to be the last surviving concrete house built by Drake, one of the very early pioneers of the technology. See here for more:http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2009/feb/19/victorian-concrete-houseSorry, I am going to lock this new thread as there is already a discussion about it here http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,185836 - The Administrator Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5497-where-is-it-the-concrete-house/#findComment-176644 Share on other sites
