Laptop won't turn on

I have a Sony Vaio laptop that won't turn on. When plugged in and switched on the lights come on and it appears to be working but it doesn't actually come on.

I suspect it also needs a bit of a programme clean-up to help it run efficently too.

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations? Are there places locally/ people locally that could deal with this? I obviously don't want to pay a fortune as I could just purchase a new one if laptop repairs are costly.

Similar thing happened to my laptop. Taking the battery out and putting it back then restarting fixed it.

As jimbo1964 says..

Turn Off Laptop -- Unplug Power Supply Lead -- Disconnect Battery -- Press and Hold Power Button. 30 seconds.

Replace Battery -- re-connect Power Supply -- Switch Laptop back on...

If all this fails it may be necessary to reseat the RAM Cards.. This sometimes solves this problem..

Maybe check if set for external monitor only (FN button + F7 maybe ??)

I have revived "dead" laptops simply by pressing Ctrl+Alt+del at the same time. R/C

Yep - this. Sometimes takes a few go's before it works.

Hmmm, tried all suggestions so far but no joy. As before, lights come on to say it has switched on, makes computer type noises (excuse me, there is a long distance between me and Bill Gates) but screen remains black.

Any more help out there please?!

Leave it in that state overnight - may just be a very slow boot from a massive windows update - especially if you have been trying to use it after a long time of not using it.

Does the screen come on at all (say for the start-up BIOS check)? If not, you may have a dead screen. Have you got an external monitor or HDMI cable/TV you can try?
