Price of renting a garage - Southwark 25% increase!

Just asking around what you lot may pay.

We rent garages off Southwark and it's just gone up a whopping 25% and we will now pay ?12.24 a week.

Southwark claim this is still at the lower end of the London average.

Do any of you rent garages and is this true?

The way the credit crunch is going I might have to live in one, so sounds very reasonable to me!

Still, wonder if it worth arguing to the rent tribunal. I don't think they care too much about optional non residential places though...

I rented a storage space privately and to be fair paid a fair bit more than that (and I shopped around) ... and while it is not entirely comparable, I am not entirely sure if what you are paying is entirely unreasonable.

probably more than offset by the reduction in vehicle insurance. I'd like a garage to store the untold junk, never mind the car. Are they easy to get?

I too will now be having to pay the ?12 per week too :-(

Still a bargain compared to my other one, of ?130 a month.

Asset - As for reduction in vehicle insurance. Not in my instance. My classic car policy was exactly the same, so out of interest I asked about the "Modern" car that lives in the street. A not so whopping ?80 saving over the year.

Piece of mind is worth it though.

I think it makes our bike insurance cheaper, and we have quite a few bikes in those garages so yes, peace of mind is very important. Still - 25%!!!

Interesting, especially as Southwark claim they have only increased the cost of renting a house by the same amount as last year... I wonder if they consider a garage as a different option, or did they also increase that cost by 25% last year too.

We got 6 (yes, 6!) letters from the council yesterday. 1 for the flat, 1 for the shed in the basement and 1 for the garage - duplicated as they sent the identical 3 to my partner at the same address as we're joint tenants. All have increased but only the garage and shed by 25%.

Maybe if they made savings on postage they wouldn't have had to increase the rents so much!
