I was out tonight and Mrs Tips was telling me about a place in Japan where once a month they had Big Rubbish Day where people stuck big stuff outside their houses/flats (sofa's, beds, fridges etc) and it would be taken by others in the community. A friend of hers furnished a flat through it.

Mrs Tips has recently contacted the council who said she had a 7 day wait for big rubbish collection from the council and frustrations about replies on email so we haven't been able to confirm when we can leave stuff out to get picked up. This was after difficulties contacting places that might be able to pick up the stuff to recycle who said we have to stay in all day to pick up - i.e. no street pick up.

So anyway I was wandering whether it was a good idea to have a Big Rubbish Day. Cut all the council admin. If you stick stuff out the front of your gaff on say the first Monday of the month the council will pick it up by the end of the day. You could put some kind of council type sticker on it if you wanted to confirm this. This would make it open season for any other person or white man van to pick stuff up - and re-use recycle stuff - before the council got round.

When I lived in Peckham I stuck stuff out the regularly got snaffled up including a 3 piece suite. My mate in San Francisco says that is what happens there - anything outside your property is fair game - a bit like stuff in a skip.

Just a thought

When we moved house I put lots of things outside my place in ED and was delighted they got taken by new owners. A couple of things were left and I took them to the tip in Vale St. I think its brilliant - like a local Freecycle :)

I hope whoever picked up the ailing houseplant I couldnt be bothered to rescue the other day loves it more than I did too!

Crystal Tips, nice idea.

Mikecg - skip sifters paradise? Hardly. Friend of mine picked up a beautiful fanlight from outside a house renovation in Holland Park (think it's a bit posher there than here) - had it fitted with mirrored glass and it's absolutely stunning.

I'd far rather that furniture that was still fully serviceable (though no longer required) went to a good home than went to landfill.

great idea - we have often put items out with a note saying 'help yourself'. not always complete rubbish - just stuff we just dont need/have room for. I would love this - free rein to rifle thro some junk! Nothing wrong with skip sifting - as long as you ask first and what a great way to stop unnecessary waste. I would love this!
It certainly already happens on our street - there is often stuff outside houses with a "help yourself" note, and we have also put things out that we no longer need. I've also had a couple of instances of people knocking on the door asking if they can take stuff that I've left out for the council to collect.

Oooh, I was spitting mad today. Somebody in Dulwich Village was putting out a lovely set of shelves when I was driving past (clearly posher over there lol) - by the time I turned the car round it had been snaffled by another passer by! You've got to be quick off the mark....

Incidentally, the tip at Vale St is only taking recyclable items from 1 April, so get rid this week if you need to or you will have to go up Walworth Rd or over to Battersea.

This is what you mean, in most cities you have to pay more according to the size and how much of the rubbish can be recycled

EDIT:

In the 80s- early 90s yes, it was common for foreign residents to furnish homes with street rubbish, but I believe that its now illegal if the stuff has a paid label on it for collection. Also, in some council approved markets there are sometimes places where you can drop off stuff for others. There was one community that got written about by The Japan Times (a pretty crap paper, actually) and our BBC who have one of the best recycling rates in the world.

Ah, linkage here:

If you sign up to a local scheme, depending on the area, on top of the enforced recycling (unless you live in a "mansion") you can also trade your stuff like newspapers and cardboard etc for toilet rolls, blank cdrs (made from corn starch!) and other recycled goods.

They have a monthly dump day for big stuff in Germany too.

A friend who was strapped for cash, furnished his whole flat with goods saved by driving around the neighbourhood the night before the official guys collect.

They have different days for each area, which also helped.

Would it be an improvement to have the same here?

    • I never said I thought it was targeted or deliberate. There also has never been a “stand off” or confrontation, we’ve spoken to them in a friendly manner about it. Our experience is they don’t seem to care. That’s the frustrating thing for us, if someone politely raises a concern at least take a second to reflect. Treat others how you would want to be treated.  I don’t want them to lose their job, far from it. But considering it could cost me a days work to fix any damage, I’m within my right to try prevent it.
    • The SE22 Evri delivery family are lovely, and always say hello wherever we spot them in the area. We gave them a box of chocolates during Covid as they were working their socks off at Christmas
    • What was he doing on the stage at Glastonbury? Or on the stage at the other concert in Finsbury Park? Grinning like a Cheshire cat whilst pissed and stoned 20 somethings on the promise of free internet sung-- Oh Jeremy Corbyn---  What were his policies for Northern mining towns with no jobs or infrastructure? Free Internet and university places for youngsters. What were his other manifesto pledges? Why all the ambiguity over Brexit?  I didn't like Thatcher, Blair or May or Tony but I respected them as politicians because they stood by what they believed in. I respect all politicians across the board that stick to their principles. Corbyn didn't and its why he got  annihilated at the polls. A socialist, anti imperialist and anti capitalist that said he voted for an imperialist and pro capitalist cabal. He refused to say how he'd vote over and over again until the last knockings. He did so to appease the Islington elite and middle class students he was courting. The same people that were screaming that Brexit was racist. At the same time the EU were holding black and Asian immigrants in refugee camps overseas but not a word on that! Corbyn created and courted a student union protest movement that screamed at and shouted down anyone not on the left . They claimed Starmer and the centre right of labour were tories. He didn't get elected  because he, his movement and policies were unelectable, twice. He turned out not to have the convictions of his politics and died on his own sword.    Reform won't win an election. All the idiots that voted for them to keep out Labour actually enabled Labour. They'll be back voting tory next time.    Farage wouldn't be able to make his millions if he was in power. He's a very devious shyster but I very much doubt he'd actually want the responsibility that governance requires.
    • The purge of hard left members that were part of Corbyn's, Mcdonnel's and Lansmans momentum that purged the party of right wing and centrist members. That's politics. It's what Blair did to win, its what Starmer had to do to win. This country doesn't vote in extreme left or right governments. That's partly why Corbyn lost  We're pretty much a centrist bunch.  It doesn't make it false either. It's an opinion based on the voting patterns, demography and statistics. Can you explain then why former mining constituencies that despise the tories voted for them or abstained rather than vote for Corbyns Labour?  What is the truth then? But he never got elected!!! Why? He should have been binned off there and then. Why he was allowed to hang about is an outrage. I hold him party responsible for the shit show that we've had to endure since.
