Re: East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

Posted by James Barber June 01, 07:52PM

This weekend lots of local streets are joining in and celebrating the Big Lunch with neighbours. it means these streets will be closed to through traffic. So please be patient and leave a little more time if your driving or cycling around this coming weekend.

Saturday 6 June:

Melbourne Grove (East Dulwich Grove-Jarvis Road) 3-6pm

Sunday 7 June:

Arnott Road 10am-7pm, Archduke Road 12-7pm, Ardbeg Road 10am-5pm, Bellenden Road 12-6pm, Colby Road 9am-9pm, Desenfans Road 11am-9pm, Elsie Road 12-9pm, Friern Road 10am-6pm, Goodrich Road 1-5pm, Gowlett Road 11.30am-7pm, Jasper Road 12-8pm, Keston Road 12-9pm, Nutbrook Street 11am-5pm, Stuart Road 11am-8pm, Tarbert Road 10am-7pm.

If any of the organisers have any problems they need help with please let me know. Cllr Rosie Shimell and I have helped sort lots of problems with closing streets for community events over the years. My favourite when I led the closure of The Cut on a Friday and even managed to get Ken Livingstone on a cycle - admittedly one built for 7 people.

I'm hoping one day some neighbours will agree to have something like the Park Street in Bristol waters slide[www.lukejerram.com] but perhaps I;m getting a little ahead my self. Have fun everybody.

It was for neighbours to get to know each other better and kids to enjoy the freedom of playing outside their houses. It was fab and really appreciated by us and our little one. So lovely to meet people from further up the street and learn about our neighbours. I hope the other streets' parties go as well and enjoy as good weather.

    • My perspective is the same as yours Sue.   Biggest issue is toad rage when I cycle, mainly drivers but once a Line bike rider I expect coked up.  But even that is rare
    • I'm interested to know other people's experiences. As in any urban environment, I'm careful. I try not to use my phone outside  unnecessarily, and if I'm coming home by myself  late at night I also keep an eye out for any potential threats. But that doesn't mean  I "don't feel safe". It's just sensible. The only time I have ever felt seriously unsafe in London was decades ago  when I was a teenager, and that was one specific incident which could have happened anywhere. I do however try to avoid places with loads of right wing thugs getting drunk and waving flags.
    • I'm genuinely sorry if I have derailed this thread, which started off as being about a specific burglary in Lacon Road. I will start another thread in the lounge, because I think the general points being discussed are important.
