I was told the other day that you can't use your fireplaces if you live in London. The person pointed out that you never see smoke coming out of the chimneys in London and I said i'd never noticed smoke coming out of any household chimney anywhere because i've neve looked for it and generally people don't look up. Is he right or is it complete nonsense? I tried googling but couldn't find anything.

PS I apolagise if this should have been in the wanted advice section instead of the lounge, i couldn't decided which was best.

You can use your fireplace but the smoke must not go up the chimney as it is now deemed a hazard to nesting birds. Most people have special extractor pipes fitted into the fireplace which vent the smoke through wall-mounted filters that clean the smoke and expel it as clear exhaust. You need to change the filters about once a year.

Your post was not boring at all Sophie, I was just struck by the coincidence is all.

I'm sitting at work wishing I was at home watching the adventures of Dr Sloan and co.

Dick Van Dyke played Bert the chimney sweep in Mary Poppins.

Oh I see, I did not make the connection, i'm sorry for jumping to conclusions. I didn't want to admit it in my last post but I love Diagnosis Murder and I also wish I could be at home watching DickVD up to his usual shinanigans.

Thank you skidmarks, I had never heard of smokeless coal, sounds like a great idea.

I'm having my chimney repaired on Thursday. I had it swept last year. He's a very nice man. Also swept my friend's chimney and he stuck the brushes all the way up until the came out at the top just so the kids could stand in the street and watch and exclaim "oooohhh just like in Mary Poppins".

The're a bunch of jokers Sophie!

The only genuine thing about this thread is Dick Van Dyke's Cockney Accent in Mary Poppins....

    • Hi, just to say there was an attempted car theft at the FH end of Underhill over Friday night. Without wanting to go into all the detail, they were pretty adamant and took a great deal of time to (try) take the car. The police came within minutes, and drove around etc.. The police said the car was in demand at the moment. I don’t know if that was brand or model. notwithstanding what the police said, all car owners should be vigilant and neighbours. These thieves were interrupted twice by neighbours, but the thieves came back etc and the neighbours didn’t put 2+2 together as to what was happening to the car. The thieves were two guys, on the cctv it looked like they were wearing grey, but it may have been black (cctv can look odd at night). My neighbours said they were black. They had a bag with them, no doubt carrying tools and they may have been dropped off by a car, that is being investigated.  Take care!!
