On the west coast the most popular beach spots are Langkawi and Pangkor - both islands, but easily accessible by ferry or by air. Langkawi is more developed and has plenty of hotels, including some very smart (and consequently very pricy) ones. The main beaches are Cenang and Tengah, which are next to each other, and have lots of places to stay, eat, and do holiday type stuff. I was in Langkawi in April with the family and had a good time. The drawback is that many of the hotels in Langkawi are not great and are overpriced by Malaysian standards. In Pangkor I've only been to Pangkor Laut, which is a private island resort, and is fab but expensive.

There are beaches in Penang, lots of hotels and facilities but the water is a bit murky.

The best beaches in Malaysia are on the west coast - the water is much clearer. Again, the islands are the most popular - Perhentians, Tioman and Redang. I'm told that Perhentian has the best beaches, but not much in the way of facilities (and no booze).

BTW, in November it's going to rain - a lot.
