Anyone had a problem with their Apple Computer in particular the hard drive

Recommended Posts

Our Apple desktop computer requires a replacement hard drive. We discovered this when a folder with a ? within it appeared on the screen. It is less than two years old and fortunately we purchased it in John Lewis, unlike Apple they provide a two year parts & labour guarantee. They are happy to replace the hard drive but any retrieval of data is our responsibility. One lesson from this is you should back up your data either monthly or with an external hard drive, a direct quote from John Lewis!

good advice from John Lewis... back up... back up... back up...

don't panic, the ? icon my not mean you need a new hard drive, it my be sortable

I have a great tech guy who helps me for ?45 per hour with my Mac needs

I am sure he should be able to sort it out or retrieve you data

he's based in Crystal Palace Road

and has always been to fix problems for me

would you like me to check if he's ok for me to give you his number?

We spent a long morning "trouble shooting" with Apple Regent Street......it needs a new hard drive!

I would like to know how to "rescue" if poss what's on the hard drive.....family photo's mainly

What bugs me is that it's hardly used and fairly new, just over a year....it's a beautiful piece to look

at but that's not the real reason we got it! Our bog standard HP ug bug has never let us down!

We also purchased a Macbook with the desktop and it had a faulty battery......oh Apple!!!

for anyone else suffering from such problems that didn't buy their product from john lewis you can actually claim that you are entitled to replacement goods. it is a little known fact that certain purchases such as computers washing machines etc... that cost a lot are considered above just having to work for one year.

i found this out due to my brother in law experiencing massive problems with a lap top that was jut 13 months old. he got advice from the government agency that deals with consumer rights and he finally got his lap top replaced for free.

essentially the consumer rights idea is that if you lay out that kind of cash the product should last a lot longer than just 12 months.

as for rescuing material on a dead hard drive, sadly the silence of non replies explains it all. many moons ago i was an avid (editing kit) engineer and when a drive goes it goes. have you asked at micro anvika?

what did the guy at the apple store tell you was the actual problem. i always thought that the icon with the '?' just meant it didn't know where the start up disc was, in the old days that was easy to fix...

p.s. there is a video card problem that is listed on apple as one that they will fix for free as it has been accepted as a manufacturing problem with a whole batch of them. can't remember the exact dates but it covers the last few years. i know this is unrelated but incase anyone else was suffering from eratic problems that weren't making sense: it could be your video card collapsing.

all this said, i still think apple make the nicest, best looking and user friendly computers in the world.

    • Ohh dear.  Fireworks can be great fun.  Where I used to live the kids would have firework wars/games.  Watching them was more enjoyable than watching  TV. (Which you could hardly hear due to the pops and bangs).  It's not like anyone/anything could stop them. I would still prefer organised public displays that are affordable.   And I agree that fireworks cause problems for wild life, pets and people.   It seems to be one of those things that just happens so we have to put up with it.  But it is still not as problematic here as in other areas in London - that's for sure.
    • I made sure to set off a few today just to rile you guys up 😇😂 Always looking for something to criticise
    • Ugly...maybe..does it bother me..NO! I think its somehow reassuring to see theres still phoneboxes around. East Dulwich may well be getrified but there may well be some elderly people who don't have mobiles and kids who may have lost theirs adults ditto etc etc. I'd rather keep it than lose it...just because i don't use it does'nt mean its not needed.  there are many eyesores in the modern world not all of them as potentially useful.
    • I strongly recommend Balayage salon in Lordship lane as everytime I visit, they make me feel very spicial with thier profisionalism and care.   I have been going there for the last 10 years maybe more, and will never exchange them for any other. They are profisional, welcoming and they also always have an offer. I feel like a new woman every time. X
