The first remedy to try is to switch the phone off -fully-and leave it off for a few minutes. Many gremlins disappear during those few minutes.

Has it ever been exposed to water? In any quantity? This could include steam if you happen to have it in the bathroom when showering. Parts could have corroded slowly, and that is only now affecting the phone.

Do running apps survive a reload - I'd kill them all manually

My iphone5 went downhill when I used 'non apple certified' charging cables mind

Always use the proper ones now.

Battery is done. Mine did exact same. Take it to Apple shop and they'll replace phone for nominal fee.
