Unwanted kitchen knives

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can get rid of some unwanted kitchen knives? I presume you shouldn't just throw them away in the normal household rubbish. Can they be recycled?

If they are metal then I guess they can be recycled, but otherwise I'd have thought you can put them with the rubbish if you wrap them up well so nobody can be hurt.

I put broken glass in with household rubbish, but I wrap it up well with newspaper and sellotape (or bubble wrap) and mark it "broken glass", so you could do the same with knives?

The reuse and recycling centre will take them, if you can get up there.

Thanks to both of you. Will probably need to take a trip to the dump to get rid of a nasty old carpet so could definitely take the knives to the reuse centre.

AA special trip just to drop knives off would probably generate more pollution that would be saved in recycling them...
