Excuse me if this is posted in the wrong section but I wanted to pick on the collective brains/experience of the Family Room ...

We are finally going to replace our old and flimsy (and ugly) front door. We want a Victorian / Edwardian style with two glazed panels but for it to be solid and secure. We had Banham come round and quote but I nearly fell off my chair at the cost... Have tried to do some googling but none of the firms give prices online

So, am I just being unrealistic or is this what it costs to get a front door which looks good but is also secure? Has anyone else replaced their door and have recommendations or sage advice??

thanks

Try Selectadoor in Penge. They don't have a website so it's best to go in and speak to them directly and look at all their door samples. I purchased a standard size Victorian four-panel, half-glazed (sandblasted toughened glass) door and matching fanlight with all locks and hardware, and it cost me somewhere around ?750 including fitting. I was able to use the existing door frame so that saved me quite a bit. The door is solid wood, although I don't recall if it's hardwood or not.

And, if you decided you'd prefer to spend ?8k+, the London Door Company is just down the road so you can pop in to see them as well :-)

    • So for the vast, vast majority of people their internet is access via wires (or fibre) supplied by openreach, virgin or one of the smaller providers like community fibre so there is a physical medium involved. However you can buy off-the-shelf 5G Routers that have a SIM card slot.  Put a 5G SIM card in it and you can then access the internet from your home devices via 5G.  Imagine hot-spotting your phone and sharing it.  Effectively that's what your doing. Rather than buy one, 3 (and I think EE) allow you to take out a contract for a 5G SIM and the router for around £20-25 a month. Speeds won't be as fast but I get around 80 gig bits download speed and it holds up fine for us. Thus the mobile providers gain a foothold in the "broadband" market. 3 offer a no-quibble 30 day guarantee so you can try it out and if you find your signal isn't strong or reliable enough you can take it back for no charge.
    • Me too, now and then it would be down to the exchange and an issue there.  Comparing what I have had done in the last 15 or so years with them, friends have had more issues with Sky, Virgin etc than I have ever had!  I moved to fibre a while ago with them, and, 'touchwood', everything has been great.
    • Very happy to give another recommendation for Dave - he did a super job on our bedroom recently fitting underlay and carpet. Really great finish and very reasonably priced plus a lovely guy!
    • With the current economic crisis, there are still plenty of people who will pay a fiver for a cake or upwards for a sandwich. Whether that's at Gail's or any other bakery - M&S included. I've just discovered the M&S Marmite sandwich which is a steal at £2.50 or something. Love their salads too. I rarely buy cakes - I make lots as I know what's in them, and it's infinitely cheaper
